MAX SOMEHOW CONVINCED her brother to drive me to the trick-or-treating area my friends are.

when i left the house, i was wearing last year's ghost costume. since it was baggy, it still fit me. so bev won't even know i really went as freddy krueger.

there was an awkward silence in the car, but billy's thoughts were so loud. i couldn't even escape them. most were creepy, like how middle school boy's moms are hot. or middle school girls are hot.

i didn't want to be in this car anymore.

"we're here," billy tells us, taking the cigarette out of his mouth. he didn't even give us a chance to open the door before he yelled at us to get out.

"well he's a ray of sunshine," i tell max sarcastically after billy drives off.

"i know right?" max replies with the same energy as we laugh.

'it's stupid. what does max have that i don't.' i hear mike's thoughts echo in my head. i look around before my eyes settle on him and the rest of my friends.

"look, max," i point at my friends, although she had a mask on, i knew she was smirking.

we waited until they knocked on someone's door, hiding behind a tree. once they started walking away, max grabbed my hand and we ran towards them.

my heart raced.

not from the running, but from holding max's hand.

that's when max and i jump in front of them, all of them screaming like little girls.

"holy! you should have seen the look on your faces," max says as she lifts up her mask to speak clearer.

"wait? y/n?" mike, takes off my mask as i laugh and nod.

"you scream like little girls," i tell him, taking my mask back.

"b-but you're a ghost?" bev asks, clutching her heart.

"what?" dustin asks, confused.

"she had on a ghost costume when she left with max!"

"she left with max?" mike asks, glaring at the latter.

"um, we should hit up loch nora," i look at max, holding her arm.

she nods, blushing. she grabs my hand as we run towards said street.

-

"ANOTHER FULL SIZE. like, seriously, rich people are such suckers," dustin laughs, before looking up nervously.

"wait, you're not rich, right?"

"no, she lives up on old cherry road," i tell him, we were all walking together, spare will and mike. they were a few feet behind.

"oh."

"no, it's fine. i mean the street is good for skating," max elbows me as i laugh.

"there's so much sour candy in your bag!" lucas gasps, looking in my stash.

"what's wrong with that?" max asks as i nervously laugh.

"she has an obsession with that stuff. she'll eat all of that in one sitting. guaranteed," dustin informs her as her eyes go wide.

"no way, i love that stuff too," max says, looking in my bag. there were cry baby's, sour skittles, and sour punch straws.

"dude, you gotta stay at my house tonight," max tells me, but i was nervous. her brother scared me.

yet she seemed to notice my discomfort, telling me, "my brother won't be home, don't worry!"

i smiled at her and nodded. i was going to have a sleepover at max's house!

ranny speaks-
so yes, i know that sour punch straws and sour skittles weren't invented until the 90's and 2000's, but there weren't many sour candies in the 80's that i could find !
