Oh, I heard everything. The fight between my daughter, Kenzi, and Liam. If I were on a side, I would probably be on Kenzi's. Not because she's my sorta-daughter and I want her to like me, but because she really has a point. I had heard Zendaya say that she had planned this. I couldn't believe she actually did it. I had told her to stop butting into people's business but she never cared. I asked her if she'd like it if someone wanted her to forget about Nikki, and she said, "Mom, Nikki isn't real, I made that story up."
I couldn't believe it, she had made that story up. I should have known. I had never heard her talking about Nikki in the past, and I had never heard her ask if she could attend a funeral.
I knocked on Kenzi's door at around midnight, she hasn't slept yet, every once in a while, I could hear a sob coming from her room.
"Kenzi honey?" I say, opening the door "You awake?"
She rubs the tears out of her eyes, "Yeah," she sniffs.
"Can I sit down?" I ask gently.
"Yeah," she says.
I sat down and she got up.
"I'm sorry I've been acting like this," she says, "It's just that it's hard for me, losing a friend so far behind."
"Oh, Kenzi," I push her toward me and bury her into a hug, "I understand."
She sniffs again, then she sobs into my shoulders.
"I could always take you to America," I say, "You could meet her again,"
"I don't even have her phone number anymore," I say, "And I don't remember the name of the orphanage. Plus, school's about to start, we'll never make it back in time."
I sigh, "You're right, and I'm sorry you have to be like this. Zendaya isn't any better, she was groaning today."
Kenzi jumps, "She's sick?" she asks
"Yeah, you didn't know?" I ask
"No," she says, "I haven't been out since 5:00."
"You didn't eat dinner?" I ask
"No," she says, "But I had a bunch of skittles during the movie."
Her stomach grumbles, "but," she says, "I'm quite hungry right now."
"We have pasta," I say, "Why don't you eat some?"
"At midnight?" she asks
"Sure," I say, then I add, "I always like to wake up at midnight for a snack."
She laughs, "I used to like a morning snack," she says, "I would wake up at 6am and I'd eat the snack I had prepared earlier."
I took her hand and the two of us snuck into the kitchen. I warmed up the pasta for her and gave it to her.
She takes a huge bite.
"O-M-G," she spells out, "This is THE best pasta ever!!"
I laugh, she laughs, then she finishes the rest of her pasta in a minute.
"Kenzi," I say,
"Yeah?" she asks,
"Listen, I get that you miss your best friend," I say, "But it's never just gonna be you and your friend. You also have us." I motion to me and upstairs, where Zendaya and Blake are sleeping."
She looks as if she was gonna burst into tears again, "I guess." she says.
"Good," I say, "Now go get some sleep, I'm going to clean the plate."
"That's ok," she says, "I'll do it, I still have to think about something."
"Are you sure?" I ask, "I can help."
"No thanks," she says, "Good night,.." she pauses, "mom."
I blink at her in surprise, "Good night Kenzi."
