Summer was nearing, and so was Yuji's birthday. The three of you wanted to surprise him because you knew he deserved to have a party after what happened to his grandfather. He was now all alone in his house and life, so he had no choice but to work independently.
As much as possible, you buy him lunch so he can keep the money he saves. He would hug you and kiss your temple, to which you smiled at. The day his grand father died, he would put up an act to make you all think that he was okay. Even though you can tell he wasn't, you didn't push it any further.
Nobara, Megumi and you, planned a surprise party for him. Nobara for the car, Megumi for the place, and you will be the one to send out invitations. The three of you agreed to take him to the beach and set the party there.
"So what, we're just gonna ask him to bring extra clothes? Isn't that a bit obvious?" you asked while you tap your pen on your book. You were currently trying to study, but Megumi and Nobara had extra time to go where you were to plan without Yuji knowing.
Nobara scoffed playfully. "You forget we're talking about Yuji here, babe." you caught Megumi smiling a bit, finding what she said amusing. You chuckled, "You're too mean. But you're right." Nobara then stifled a laugh, which earned a sharp glance from the Librarian. The three of you continued to chuckle as quiet as possible.
Megumi kept the money the three of you split up for Yuji's surprise birthday party. Your mom was more than willing to give you more money for Yuji. She thinks Yuji is a sweetheart and it's because he treats you like a sister. You can't blame her because Yuji was just someone you can't hate. He was too nice and you just can't imagine him breaking someone's heart.
"Shoko..." you muttered and realized you haven't got Shoko's number. Nobara shot her head up and nodded eagerly at you. "Yes, invite her!" she says in a hushed voice. Megumi was busy reading beside you but you know he was listening.
You agreed with her, so the first thing in your mind was to text Gojo. He didn't respond back, so you locked your phone and continued to think of people to invite to the surprise party.
The sight of Yuji made you subtly nudge Megumi on your side, and kick Nobara's foot softly to get their attention. He was waving at you so you raised your hand in acknowledgement. "He's here." you muttered. They both acted naturally as Yuji skipped towards your table.
"Been looking everywhere for you guys." he says as he chewed on his gum. "Well, we're almost done reading anyways." you shrugged. His mouth formed an 'o', nudging his head to the door. "C'mon! Let's go home."
You grabbed your things and slung your bag on your shoulder then caught the librarian shaking her head. The four of you laughed at that as soon as you went out of the library.
"She's always grumpy for no reason!" Yuji complained and threw his hands to the air. Nobara clicked her tongue, "You're the reason why." Yuji stuck his tongue out playfully at her so she rolled her eyes at him. Their usual banter went on again.
Megumi called you so you turned your head at him. He was slightly taller than you so you still had to look up at him. He cleared his throat, "My sister invited you for dinner later..."
His sister, Tsumiki, would often let you taste her food (Megumi's lunch) since she knows how much you loved her cooking. You often stay at their house to bond with Megumi since you were comfortable in being with him.
You know he was the closest to you because he acts freely around you. The Megumi you see outside isn't the same when it's just the two of you. Nobara and Yuji were your bestfriends too, but Megumi opens up to you more.
He wasn't really the type to say something about his past but you slightly have an idea about it because of his sister. You heard from Tsumiki that his father left him when his mother died giving birth to him. Then he went with Tsumiki's mother, and left again.
