"The French Ministry answered!"

Malfoy and I raise our heads. Back in Hogwarts for four days now, we are studying in the library. Hermione is running towards us, brandishing a letter. She sits next to us and hands the paper to Malfoy.

"Pr McGonagall has just received it" she pants, breathless. "She gave it to me so you could translate it."

He snorts.

"Oh, really? I thought you'd be able to translate it by yourself..."

She blushes.

"Don't be like that, you know I can only understand a few words!" she complains. "I didn't mean to spy on you and your mom, I just wanted to see if I still could understand some sentences..."

"Mouais, si tu le dis" he sniffs.

[« Mmh, yeah, if you say so... »]

Her ears turn red as well. He gives her a warning look, unfolds the letter and starts reading through it.

"...hmmm, votre lettre a retenu toute notre attention... blah blah... apparently they are interested in my case, the French Ministry has a register for the Maledictuses in their country, like the English Ministry has a register with Animagi. They have had several problems with a... snake woman, and they started to write a register from that moment on."

He pauses, reading, and turns pale.

"What is it Malfoy?" I ask, worried.

He raises his hand to stop me. He's moving his lips quickly, reading as quickly as he can, his eyes thumbing through the paper.

"Wait, I have to translate this first... Er... The female snake Maledictus who was described in the witch notebook, they know her. She caused a lot of troubles in Paris in 1927... er... elle s'est attaquée au propriétaire du cirque et s'est enfuie... She attacked the person who owned the circus, she was part of the show and she ran away... Her name was... Nagini."

He looks up at me, Hermione blinks.

"What?" I let out incredulously. "Nagini was a witch once? Merlin! I thought this... thing had always been a snake. But that explains a lot..."

Hermione winces.

"That's not a good news, she ended her life in the shape of a snake and she was Voldermort's pet! His Horcrux, on top of that!"

"I'd rather not be cut in two by Longbottom" Malfoy says gloomily.

"Continue reading" I push him. "What else can they say about Maledictuses?"

He reports his attention onto the letter.

"... votre état ne correspond en aucun point à une malédiction de sang... Phew! They say my state has nothing to do with a blood curse. Only women are affected. Always. Plus, during the first years of the malediction, Maledictuses can always control their transformation, until they reach the breaking point."

His face is transfigured with relief, he smiles to me. It's been a while since I've seen him so genuinely happy.

"I'm glad you're not affected by a blood curse, that's a good news."

"But we still don't know what spell turns him into a snake half of the day" my best friend pouts. "This is so frustrating!"

"I'm sorry, Granger, but I don't share your deception" Malfoy sneers. "The fact that your theory is proved wrong can't make me happier!"

She huffs some air through her nose and straightens up, seeming to get some strength back.

"Whatever! I'll dig some more and I'll find what you have!" (She points her finger at him menacingly.) "And we'll cure you! Got it?!"
