The rest of that night smoothed over nicely, only to be utterly wrecked when the next day came rolling around. Not only did Kagura transform by carelessly running into the mailman after another spat with Kyo; but Tohru had assembled all the households inhabitants into the living room shortly after everyone arrived home from school, proclaiming that she had some news to share.
Megumi had just sat alongside the, for some reason, sombre girl, leisurely scrolling through her phone's feed. She liked some of the photos she was being shown but ensured to maintain her primary concentration on the girl beside her. Her haphazard scrolling was put to a halt when Tohru spoke up, her words sending a spike of shock down her spine from surprise.
"Grandfather says the renovations are over." She had confessed softly.
Megumi's eyes snapped up from her phone's screen fast enough to give her whiplash. She internally begged the brunette to make eye contact with her, only for Tohru to downcast her eyes. Evading not only Megumi's peering eyes but also the other residents and they abruptly provided her their undivided attention.
"That was surprisingly quick," Shigure admitted, looking up from his daily newspaper to send a raised brow to the girl.
"Yes. The exterior walls aren't complete yet, but he called and told me it's ready for us to live in now... So..." Her words fell off sadly, "Oh, no! I haven't started cooking yet!"
Tohru drastically altered the tone of her voice, faux happiness being forced as opposed to the melancholy tone she was using only seconds before. Utilizing dinner as a way out of a bleak situation, intending to use the excuse as an escape from it.
Unfortunately for Tohru, Shigure spoke up before she could flee to the kitchen, inadvertently shutting down her getaway plan. "That's okay. Why don't we go out to eat tonight?"
Tohru shook her head, forever persistent. "It'll be alright! I already stocked the ingredients!"
And just like that, the four Sohma's starred as she crept away into the kitchen. A hushed stillness overtook the living room, no one making an effort to rid the room of it either. Gaping blankly at the door where the brunette had vanished behind. Trying to process the kind-hearted girl's words and the weight they carried.
Megumi looked down at her long-forgotten phone. The screen pitch black as it laid face up on the hardwood table, appearing to have fallen from her grasp during the one-sided conversation. She gazed, conflicted, at the phone's dark screen, making eye contact with the monochrome reflection of herself.
She tried her best to disregard the sadness that was steadily creeping into her heart as Tohru's words rooted themselves in her brain like the harmful vines of a rose.
