"She's just a mama's girl."

These were the words Megumi picked up when she and Kyo arrived at the old stone stairs leading to Shigure's. In the midday heat that followed their school day, Megumi was not expecting to see a small boy no older than twelve sitting crouched on the bottom step. In his hands was a small, olive-green pocketbook made of worn-down leather that was oddly familiar.

Megumi knew who it was the second the two first years got within five feet. From his short brown hair that constantly looked windswept, to the deceivingly innocent brown eyes that were scarcely similar to Tohru's, the sneaky smirk stretched across his boyish face that still had baby fat. He looked just as he had last time Megumi had seen him: Hiro Sohma–the sheep Zodiac.

He laughed about something to himself as Megumi grew nearer, yet to notice their presence until Kyo called out to the kid. "Hiro?" The teen said in confusion, looking between the boy and the book he held. "What are you doing here?"

Megumi felt like a bug under a magnifying lens as Hiro looked skeptically at them with a level of scrutinization fit for a cruel prince. The small boy let out a bored sigh as he snapped the small book shut with a flourish, turning his nose up at Kyo. "What's it to you?" He questioned snottily, "Are you saying it's illegal for me to sit here? Do I need your permission? Who died and made you king?"

Kyo grits his teeth loudly and Megumi can see him physically struggling to hold himself back from attacking the bratty child. "Cut the crap, kid!" He yelled, and Megumi was surprised he managed to censor himself, though she doubted it meant much to Hiro. "What a cheeky brat!"

"You're really losing your temper over some 'brat?'" Hiro shot back instantly, leaning back on his hands and exuding a 'too cool to care' energy.

Megumi latched onto the back of Kyo's shirt when he made to lunge at Hiro, using all her strength to pull him back. "D-Don't at-attack him!" She cried, her heels digging into the dirt.

Kyo's clenched fist wavered in the air, his knuckles white as he allowed himself to be pulled back from the sitting boy. An insult was loaded on his tongue, ready to be fired at the boy, yet he stopped himself. He gave a gruff scoff and gently pried Megumi's hands away from his shirt before she wrinkled it. "Watch it." He muttered, determined to at least get the last word.

"Hiro!" A much lighter voice called, although it was tinged with worry and slight panic.

Tohru ran up to where the three were arguing–really it was the two boys, Megumi felt like a mere spectator–eyes tinged red with tears. She was still in her school uniform like the other two teens, yet Megumi knew she had been on her way to work, the reason she was walking home alone with only Kyo.

But with the short skirt that compiled their school uniform and Tohru's short socks, Megumi could easily see the dirt and scuff marks on the girl's knees. The skin had been busted on her right knee like it took the brunt of a fall, the skin red, bits of dried blood surrounding the shallow cuts. The cut would hurt for a bit, but surely not enough to cause her to cry–let alone run after and call out to Hiro the way she did. Megumi narrowed her eyes slightly as she looked between the two.
