Megumi awoke that morning with rapid knocks on her door. They were light but firm, loud enough to be heard thoroughly, but not loud enough to garner the attention of those it wasn't meant for. With eyes tainted by sleep, Megumi began to awake for the day, cursing the sun as it burned her eyes.
The sun was already close to its peak when Megumi lazily opened her blinds, a striking shock into her body like lightning. With a sudden sick feeling in her stomach, Megumi raced over to her door–not without tripping over her shoes she forgot to put up the night before–throwing the wood open to reveal Tohru.
Tohru was the opposite of Megumi. Her hair was brushed and pulled out of her face like usual, and a gorgeous black dress was hanging off her slim body. Sheer tights were pulled up her legs to shield them from the cold, a pair of Megumi's old ballet flats shielding her feet. The lightest bit of blush was spread onto the apples of her cheeks, giving her face a youthful look that suited her.
With shining eyes, Tohru greeted the sleepy girl. "Good morning!" She said, reaching out to brush some hair out of Megumi's face. She walked into the girl's room, undeterred by its messy nature, and laid something cleanly on her unmade bed. "I think this one should fit you–if it doesn't, I have another one we can try!"
Megumi crept up behind the girl, peering over her shoulder to view the sleek dress she had laid out for her. It was similar enough to Tohru's to tell easily it was hers, seeing as Megumi herself didn't own a black dress fitting for the occasion. With a square neckline and ruffled sleeves that appeared to end a few inches before the elbow, the dress looked fitting for the occasion.
A date was circled in red in Megumi's calendar that she kept hanging up above her cluttered desk, highlighting the date 'May 1st'. It was a date that hadn't had any strength for Megumi in the years prior, but this year it meant something. With the new inclusion of Tohru in the household, the group of Sohma's had been notified of the significance of the date held to the young girl. May first was no longer another day to get through, but instead a day to think about the life that was taken too soon; Tohru's mother–Kyoko.
Megumi had been hesitant to join Tohru on the day she wished to visit her mother's grave, unsure if she was deserving of the right after never meeting the woman and only knowing Torhu for so long. Of course, Torhu had dispelled her worries with something as simple as a smile, explaining that was all the more reason for her to come: to meet her mother. Unable to beat that reasoning, Megumi gave in.
And yet with all the anxieties she held the night before and all the double-checking she did to make sure she had an alarm set, she slept past it all. In a panic, Megumi picked up her brush and began to straighten out her hair in a frenzy as she watched Tohru skim through her jewelry box with interest. "It looks fine!" She said, in reference to the girl's worries. "How- How long do we ha-have before we need to leave–you sh-should have woken me up on time!"
