SONG: Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

AUTHOR'S NOTE: RETURNING TO OUR POV TO LEAD UP TO US WAKING UP AS IT ALL TAKES PLACE AROUND OUR BEDSIDE BUT WE ARE CURRENTLY STILL COMATOSE

It’d been several days since the accident and tests showed that your brain was healing so no one could understand why you weren’t waking up. In your room, your mom tried to reason with Jaden:
“I know Amelie was released if you want to go check on her. We will be fine here for a while.”

She looked over at Josh who was curled up in a chair on the edge of the room and smiled.

Jaden: “I just don’t want to face Griffin.”

Mom: “Sweetie, you are going to have to forgive him if you want things to go back to normal with Amelie. That’s her brother.”

Jaden: “I don’t understand how you guys just forgave him already.”

Mom: “He said he was sleeping off the alcohol in his car and must have bumped the gear and rolled out into the street.”

Jaden shook his head, fighting the fury that still boiled below the surface. If anyone knew anything about Jaden it’s that he struggled with forgiveness more than anything.

Mom: “Our family has known the Zilbers your whole life. I know Griffin would never do anything to hurt anyone on purpose especially your sister and Amelie.”

You: *choking on your words*
“No. No. That’s not- That can’t be right.”

Your mom rushed to your side while Jaden looked confused remembering those same words as the first ones Amelie spoke when she woke up. Your mom tried to calm you down but it wasn’t working as you tried to yank the oxygen tube off your face.

You: “I saw him in the street. He was calling my name when I was hit.”

Mom: “You must be confused, sweetheart. Jaden go grab the doctor.”

Jaden hurried into the hallway as you stared behind her in shock.

Mom: “He’s been here since the accident. He hasn’t left.”

She bent over and whispered:
“I can see why you’ve been so stuck on him. He sure is cute.”

Your mom woke up Josh as you stared at him in disbelief.

Mom: “Josh, honey. Wake up. I’m going to go see what’s taking the doctor so long. Can you sit with her while I-”

Josh: *trying to wake himself up fully*
“Yeah, sure.”

He stumbled over then stopped in his tracks at the edge of your bed:
“Oh my God. You’re awake!”

He sat down next to you and grabbed your hand, confessing:
“I felt responsible like if I hadn't been out in the street fighting with your brother then you wouldn't have been there either.”

He started to tear up so you reached out and wiped his face:
“This isn’t your fault at all.”

The doctor walked in with your mom and Jaden following behind. He examined you and flipped for your chart for a few moments before announcing:
“I still want to run a few more tests, but if those go well she can go home tomorrow.”

Josh: “Already?”

Doctor: “Yep. All her exams have looked very promising. She just needed a little more rest than we anticipated and that happens sometimes.”

Mom: “Our sleeping beauty is back with us and that’s all that matters.”

The doctor wrote something in your chart before heading out to order the tests he was insisting on.

Mom: “You heard him. She’s going to be okay so I want you boys to both get to practice. You have a championship game in 3 weeks!”
