SONG: How Not To by Dan + Shay

You and Amelie were unpacking your suitcase in your hotel room. It was a lot nicer than you expected and only a few doors down from your brother in case something went wrong.

Amelie: “I was thinking that maybe tonight’s the night.”

You scrambled to make sense of the statement until it hit you what that statement had meant when you told her the same thing sophomore year halfway through your relationship with your first boyfriend.

You: “Tonight? He has a roommate. You have a roommate too, ya know?”

Amelie: “I was thinking maybe we could go hang with all the guys and then Jaden and I could disappear for a while.”

You scrunched your nose and looked at her, skeptically. You weren’t disapproving at all, it was beyond time your best friend finally gave it up.

You: “Just make sure you rejoin the group before bedtime because if I end up sleeping in the hallway tonight, I’m having a fit.”

You were all hanging out in Blake and Noah’s room when Bryce showed up with Mads.

You: “Mads? What are you doing here?”

You: “Mads? What are you doing here?”

Mads: “Bryce invited me to watch his game. I didn’t think your parents were going to let you two travel!!”

You: “Yep, I’m all healed. Just some bumps and bruises.”

Amelie: “I finally got my cast off yesterday, so I’m ready to get back to normal.”

Mads: “Oh my God. We should all go swimming to celebrate.”

Amelie: “Jaden? Will you help me find my suit?”

You grabbed your suit from your bag and changed quickly before you got in the way of Amelie’s plans. The whole group were splashing around the pool when you wandered in, so you climbed into the hot tub to relax. Truth was, the loud noises still made your head hurt so you were happy to have a little distance from the mayhem.

Josh came over and climbed in beside you before asking:
“Headache?”

It was a little uneasy how well he could read you already:
“Yeah. You can have fun with your friends though if you want. I don’t want you to miss out just to babysit me.”

Josh: “You’re my friend too, remember? Besides. I was getting a little grossed out watching that weird mating ritual Bryce and Mads have going on.”

You couldn’t help but laugh as Josh mimicked how Bryce was showing off for Mads.

Josh: “I think Blake has a thing for Amelie, too.”

You: “Well, Jaden isn’t gonna let him get close enough to try. You know how protective he is.”

Josh: “Trust me, my jaw still hurts sometimes. But really though, Blake is way too nice to ever steal someone’s girl.”

You: “Basketball player and nice guy? Who knew?”

Josh splashed you as he defended:
“Shut up! I’m nice.”

You laughed as you shielded yourself from the water splattering in your face. You shielded yourself with one arm while you splashed back with the other arm and you both filled the air with pure happy laughter.

Memories of the night on the beach together creep into your head and you froze up remembering things you were trying so hard to forget. You were working so hard to not let this happen, but sometimes it got the best of you. Failing to forget knowing each other in a way that was so different from how you existed together now. You climbed out of the hot tub, fighting the chills of the cool night air on your dripping wet skin.

Josh: *climbing out after you*
“Are you okay?”

Before you could answer he noticed the goosebumps forming on your shoulders and wrapped you in a towel laying nearby:
“Come on. Let me walk you back.”

*AMELIE’S POV*

She was trying to read the difference between her nerves threatening to spill over and the excitement of being able to finally give Jaden something that showed how much he meant to her.

She never intended to wait until she was newly 18, but truth is this is the first time she’s ever felt like she couldn’t last another minute without feeling everything love had to offer.

They hadn’t made it far into the search for her bathing suit and were now kissing in her bed while music played over the speaker on the bedside table. She reached her hand down to his jeans button and he paused to ask:
“Wait. Are you sure.”

She nodded against his neck as she ran her lips back up to his and whispered:
“God, yes.”

He didn’t hesitate to roll over and pin her down, intensifying the kiss.
