You flashed red in embarrassment, worried that she saw you and Josh but as you loaded up she didn’t mention it.
Mrs. Zilber: “When Amelie said she was bringing friends home, I wasn’t expecting you. I’m so happy to see you guys hanging out again. I missed you.”
Josh leaned in the open window and gave you a quick kiss before tapping the hood of the car: “Drive safe, ladies.”
Eva: “God you are so lucky, girl.”
Suddenly Mads noticed how much she loved the song on the radio and reached into the front to turn it up. You all started singing along at the top of your lungs as Amelie’s Mom drove off laughing.
Mrs. Zilber: “I’m gonna drive through here real quick if you girls wanna order some junk food.”
Mads: “God, that sounds perfect. I need a greasy burger right about now.”
Eva drunkenly hugged Amelie’s mom and swooned: “I know you’re my boyfriend’s mom, not mine but God I love you.”
Mrs. Zilber: “Oh we all love you too, sweetheart. You’re already a part of the family.”
After you’d loaded up on snacks and made it home, Mads stumbled on her way inside and your eyes widened as she declared: “I’m good. Didn’t even drop my burger!”
You stayed behind to grab a bottle of water for each of you as Mads and Eva helped Mads upstairs. You tried to make an excuse: “She must just be exhausted.”
Mrs. Zilber: “I know you guys are almost college kids and you’re gonna drink just make sure you always always find a ride.”
She was so much more chill than most moms that it amazed you Amelie ended up being so uptight. You laughed as you thought about how much Amelie had clearly changed in the short time since you used to be close. Drinking, staying at parties that late, heck… staying the night at a guys’ house she wasn’t even dating… Heartbreak tends to change you so you didn’t judge.
Mrs. Zilber added: “You can always call me too, ya know. I’ve watched you girls grow up and it’s so hard to believe you’re all starting college.”
When you got upstairs, the girls were all munching and Mads turned to Amelie and declared: “Okay, girl. You gotta spill. What’s going on with you and Blake?”
Amelie: “You’re just drunk. There’s literally nothing.”
Eva: “Oh hell no. We are all drunk, so spill.”
Amelie: “We’re just friends.”
You: “He likes you. You see that right?”
Amelie: “Maybe I’m just not ready for anything.”
Mads: “No offense, Jaden was a great boyfriend in the beginning but-”
Eva: “The whole time I’ve been around he was a world-class jerk.”
Mads: “Yeah. No kidding. I mean he’s hot af but that can only get you so far.”
Amelie looked so uncomfortable remembering Jaden much less talking about him so you swooped in to save her: “Hey now. That’s my brother you’re all calling hot.”
Mads: “Well brother or not, he changed up big time.”
Amelie: *fighting tears* “Yeah, I know.”
Griffin got dropped off by someone an hour later and popped his head in Amelie’s room to find you all painting your toes and wearing facemasks.

Griffin: “Drunken spa night?”
Mads: “Griffy! Oh my God, you have to let us put a facemask on you!”
Griffin looked at Eva who was not-so-secretly hoping he’d agree so he plopped on the floor and declared: “Okay so what’s the tea?”
As Eva smeared clay all over his perfect pores she giggled out: “God, I love you.”
Absolute panic spread through her as she realized that’d slipped out loud despite having never said those words to each other yet. Griffin softly laughed and casually repeated: “I love you, too.”
An hour later, Mads was passed out and Eva had disappeared to spend some time with Griffin. You took your opening to have a heart to heart with a visibly conflicted Amelie.
You: “It’s okay to miss him.”
Amelie: “No it’s not. He doesn’t miss me at all. Do you know that after that night he never even texted me, called me, came to see me, nothing. I sent him message after message and it was like just gone. All that love we had just stopped existing.”
You: “He will always love you, he’s just going through something that I don’t even understand.”
Amelie: “Do you think he will ever come back?”
You didn’t have the heart to tell her that you didn’t know if the old Jaden was ever coming back much less to her so you changed the subject: “Do you think there could ever be anything between you and Blake?”
Amelie: “He is literally perfect. He’s hot, he’s sweet, like seriously I swear he’s not real.”
You: “Maybe it’s time to move on?”
Amelie: “I know it’s just hard. I still love him but carrying around all those feelings alone is absolute torture.”
You hugged her and she cried: “God, I missed you.”
