SONG: Even Now by Philippa Hanna
You were stopped outside the cafe trying to work up the nerve to step inside.
Josh: "Does she even know I'm coming?"
You: "No. I never actually worked up the nerve to message her."
Josh: "What? No. Nope. I can't do this. She didn't want to hear from me. She made that clear."
You: "It's been over a year. And if she flips out, we can just go with the story that it was a coincidence running into her. We will put it behind us and never speak about her again."
Josh: "Deal."
You sat at a small table in the corner, nervously looking over the menu. Josh was half hiding behind his looking like he wanted to disappear into the pages if he could. There were a few young waitresses in today, but the moment you saw her come out from the back you knew...
She had beautiful dark hair and such a sweet smile. She was laughing with her coworker and her bubbly personality seemed so alive. For the first time the whole weekend, you started to regret doing this. Jealousy crept in and you took a deep breath to hold in your nerves. Josh could read your body language like a book and reached across the table to hold your hand.
Josh: "I don't know how I'm supposed to just talk to her."
You: "It's not that busy in here. At some point, she's going to notice you. Or you can go up to her. I don't mind waiting here."
Before he could respond, another waitress walked up to your table:
"Hey kids, what can I get started for you this morning."You both nervously ordered, secretly thankful for the reprieve. After she walked away to put in your order, you watched Charli walk back onto the floor and leaned against the register, chatting with the waitress who'd taken your order.
You: "I think I just heard her say something about being off soon. You should go now."
*JOSH'S POV*
Josh sucked in a deep breath then exhaled as many nerves as he could. As he approached his ex, she walked up to a nearby table. He paused and watched her refill the older woman's water glass. She was sitting alone in the corner, seemingly alone but as he got closer, he heard Charli say:
"Thank you so much for dropping him off to me and for watching him so last minute."The older woman reassured her:
"I never mind. He's such a sweetheart."Josh froze behind Charli as she bent down to a nearly 10 months old baby in a carrier and handed him the toy he'd just dropped. Josh's heart sunk as the little boy looked up with the same eyes he'd seen in the mirror the last 20 years of his life and cooed:
"Mama."*END JOSH'S POV*
