What happened to Groot was tragic, at least, that's how Rocket likes to tell the story. He didn't die when he protected them from crash landing on Xander even though they thought he did. Instead, Rocket had planted one of his sticks a new Groot that start to grow from the soil. When he got to that age where he no longer needed the soil, he was free to roam wherever he liked... and that was dangerous.

Instead of bringing him along on missions and potentially ruining it, Peter dumped him on you and Natasha for the time being. You two live alone together and have been for the past year, so you welcome your new guest with open arms. Groot took to you pretty easily, always being by your side no matter where you went.

At first, you didn't mind him being around you, but whenever you wanted to be intimate and alone with Natasha, he would be there. It's no secret to the Guardians or to you that Groot has attachment issues. Gamora claimed that he didn't leave her side when he first sprouted legs, and you laughed at the thought of her trying to live her life with the small plant.

Now you understand why she wanted you to have Groot. You quickly had to learn how to keep Groot busy so you and Nat could be alone. You gave him coloring books, the remote to the TV, and some other toys you know would distract him for hours. You and Natasha took advantage of the peace and quiet by just being in each other's arms.

You're watching a movie with her right now, cuddling as close as you can get. No one on the team but Clint knows that Natasha is a big softy. She may come across as tough and angry, but she melts whenever it's just you two. Her head is resting on your chest, and you run your fingers through her long hair.

You're about halfway through the movie when you see Groot running to the couch. He's too small to get up on there on his own, and when you don't immediately scoop him up, he starts to whine and cry. You can't handle seeing someone so small cry, so you have no choice but to pick him off the ground.

He climbs up your chest and rests on your shoulder, snuggling into your neck and hair.

"Comfy?" you ask Groot.

He nods happily, and you go back to cuddling with Natasha. She doesn't mind having him here because it reminds her of the family she knows she can't have. You've talked about adopting a baby, but she always denies it. Right now, you're okay with being her with her, babysitting a small tree.
