Everybody says secrets are what kill people. Secrets hold a heavy truth over your shoulders that only the person knows. Secrets are what tears families and friends apart. If everyone at the tower knew what your secret was, they would certainly kill you for it. Well, maybe disown is a better word, but it would feel like death.
Exactly three weeks ago, you and Steve had gone out on a mission alone... only one of you came back. The only reason how you were able to keep it a secret from everyone is that you're a shapeshifter. It's come in handy when you're trying to infiltrate a business or an organization from the inside.
However this time, it was a mistake to bring you along. You're the reason Steve is dead, but you can't tell anyone that. Not Tony, not Natasha, and especially not Bucky. Bucky is Steve's best friend and the love of your life. You can't possibly break his heart and make him hate you. The only option was to turn into Steve and tell Bucky that you had moved on to better things than being an Avenger. Steve is more important than you anyway.
"Hey, Buck, how are you doing?" you ask as Steve, walking into the main living room.
"Not good," he sighs and leans back on the couch. "I found this."
He holds up the photo album you made for you and Bucky's first anniversary. It's filled with memories of you two together. You thought you had gotten rid of that when you came back, but looks like you missed it. You got rid of everything else you owned because it would only prove that you had left the team for good.
"I didn't know you still had that," you say truthfully.
"Why did she leave?" he asks.
When he looks up at you, your heart breaks at how sad he looks. There are tears in his eyes, his bottom lip is trembling as he tries to keep it together, and he won't let go of the photo album. You have to remind yourself that you're supposed to be Steve. If you break, then it could cause you to turn back into yourself. You don't know whether you should break his heart more or try and comfort him. You don't know which might be better. Do you break his heart to the point he is angry at you for leaving that he forces himself to move on, or do you comfort him with the hope that you might return one day?
"I don't know," you whisper, not being able to choose.
"What did she say to you when she left? Did she mention me?"
You have to take a seat on the couch next to him or otherwise, you're going to crumble in sadness.
"She loves you so much, Buck. She just needed to figure out some things. She didn't give me any reason why, but just know she's okay."
"I miss her so much," he cries.
You don't know what else to do but watch and comfort him knowing he might never be with you again.
