Obviously I ignored Sam's advice and kept poking around the Cullens. I did try to stay out of the pack's way because they scared me more then the vampires some how, but overall I ignored her.

As soon as I woke up I was at my computer again. I dug into the Cullen's history. Carlisle had been doctor all around the country for hundreds of years. He had several names, and had been in every state, but he was there. Throughout history he had been bouncing round from town to town, never staying too long. No more than 5 years. I also found that he had a wife. I'd forgotten about Esme, no one saw her much around town. She was very beautiful as I recall. Pale like the rest of her family with long hair that flowed across her shoulders in auburn waves.

The rest of the Cullens were harder to find. It seemed like Jesper had been born in Texas, but beyond that he was a mystery. Edward had made a miraculous recovery from the Spanish Flu In Chicago and it seems like he'd been with Carlisle since. There were records of Alice having been institutionalized, but after another strange recovery she disappeared into history until she reappears with the Cullens. There was a police report about Rosalie being raped and left for dead, presumably when Carlisle got her. Emmet was harder. He didn't show up on any police or hospital reports. I finally gave up because the internet didn't seem to have any more idea of who he was than I did. If I wanted to know more I would have to go to the source.

I groaned and sat back in my chair. This was a whole mess. How had vampires gotten to Forks? What were they here to do? I needed to have a talk with Carlisle. From my research and what I'd observed about the family, he was the leader. He would have answers. Whether he'd give them was another question.

"The doctor is busy today, can I make an appointment for you?" The secretary said, not looking up from her computer.

"No, I don't need to see him for a medical thing, I just need to talk."

"You can talk in an appointment." She said, impatience lining her words. "I'll make one for tomorrow at 8."

I saw Carlisle come out of a room and tapped the counter twice before pushing off and heading in his direction. He kept his attention fixed on the patient he was leading out, but I could tell that he saw me, or at least knew that I was coming his way.

As soon as the patient was out of the way I ambushed the doctor.

"I know what you are." I said quietly.

"Yes, Edward told me of your encounter." he said, seemingly unruffled. "Would you like to move somewhere more private to discuss it in more detail? As you can imagine, I'd prefer it not get out."

He gestured to the room behind him and I allowed myself to be herded in. When we were alone I turned back to him, not wanting my back to the vampire any longer than it needed to be.

"You came looking for me after you'd found our secret," he said, tidying the tools on the counter. "why?"

"I was warned not to come looking for you. Obviously I didn't listen." I said, knowing that wasn't what he wanted. "I want to know why you're here. And where you got Emmet."

Carlisle seemed intrigued by the second question, answering it first. "Emmet was the victim of a bear mauling. Rosalie asked me to turn and save him, and I did. They've been together since, one rarely leaving the other's side. As to why we're here, we are just trying to live our lives. Like you, we just want to live in peace with those around us. Forks is a good place for us because of the clouds and small community. As I imagine you've found, we move around quite a bit, never in one place for long. We don't age so we can't stay anywhere for long."

He paused to look at me. "How much do you know about Vampires?"

I had to think for a minute. How much did I know? I knew the basics, and how to kill them, but not much more. And I didn't even know for sure how to kill them, jus the theories that weirdos on the internet had come up with. "Not much. I know the basics, but beyond that next to nothing."

He nodded and said, "Sit down and I'll tell you the story."
