Three days later Carlisle was up and about the house. Rosalie and Edward and been brining by blood for him to drink and slowly but surly his strength was returning. Alice was still bed ridden, but had managed to eat a little and was staying awake for longer and longer periods of time. Her resolve to find and destroy Jasper's killer grew each day.
I was bringing a bowl of spiced animal blood up to Alice when the door bell rang. I almost spilled the whole bowl in my rush to get the door. My first thought was that it might be Bobby and that was more important than the two sips Alice would drink. I opened the door to two abnormally tall preachers and almost slammed it right in their faces.
The shorter of the two spoke first. "Hi are you Charlie Swan? Bobby sent us to help with your ghost problem. I'm Dean Winchester and this is my brother Sam."
I nod vigorously and wave them in. "Come in and make yourselves at home. I need to bring this upstairs to Alice, I'll be right back."
I leave Carlisle to feed Alice and rush back down stairs. If Bobby sent these two they must be good. Not as good as him I'm sure, and I'd have liked to see him again, but I'll take all the help I can get.
Dean is sitting in my arm chair and Sam is perched on the couch. "Bobby gave us some idea of what's going on, but we'd love to hear it first had from you." Sam says from his spot on the couch. I almost can't see his eyes through the curtain of hair that falls over his face but I can feel the intensity of his stare on me.
"It was about a week ago. Jasper, my... boyfriend's son, was killed by something supernatural. He was up on the ceiling and there was a huge gash across his stomach and then fire."
I take a deep breath before I continue and I see the boys exchange a look.
"The other thing you need to know is that Jasper was a vampire, that's why there was no blood that night. As is Carlisle, my boyfriend, and his whole family. BUT, and it's a big but, they are as vegetarian as vampires can be. They only drink from animals, no humans. They protect the town from other covens moving in and killing people. I know it's unconventional but I need you to trust me and them and only hunt the thing that killed Jasper. Leave the vampires be. Please."
When I said the word vampire I saw both Sam and Dean stiffen and look around the house and if expecting monsters to jump out of the curtains. I hope Carlisle stays upstairs. I don't want to put him in any more danger than I need to.
Finally, Dean looks at me and says. "The attack sounds like the daemon we've been hunting. So far all we know is that it kills the same way each time, exactly as you described, and burns down the house of whomever it killed. Typically, it's a human woman not a bloodsucker."
Sam looks up then. "It killed our mother and more recently my girlfriend."
I nod in sympathy at both of them. "So how do we kill it?"
Dean huffs a laugh. "If only we knew. So far we know that this thing is a demon, one of hell's strongest, and that he has some grand scheme that he's putting in place. He's going around baptizing kids in his blood. Sam here is one of his chosen."
I see Sam grimace at this but Dean doesn't seem to notice his brother's discomfort.
"We've been tracking his progress across the US for a couple of months now, trying to catch him with no luck. We think his plan involves opening the gates of hell and letting all the daemons trapped there out but we don't know when, where, or how he plans to do it."
I nod trying to take in everything they just told me, then whip around when I hear footsteps coming down the stairs. I know it's Carlisle and I also know he's letting us know he's coming with the lout foot falls. He's as silent as a cat when he wants to be. I glance back at the brothers and see them on alert but not looking like they're about to start staking at the first glimpse.
Carlisle appears at the bottom of the stairs and his eyes immediately lock onto mine. "Is this about Jasper?" He asks in a deathly calm voice.
I nod and introduce Sam and Dean. Carlisle comes over and puts his arm around me, but keeps his eyes on the boys. "How can we help?" He says with steel in his voice.
