I wake up with a start  when the alarm starts beeping. Carlisle grabs me and pulls me to the corner of the room. "If you want to stay with her, you have to stay out of their way." He whispers in my ears as nurses and doctors flood the room.

"Whatsgoingon?" I mumble, still trying to rub the sleep from my eyes and trying to catch a glimpse of what's happening to my daughter.

"Her oxygen levels tanked which caused her heart to beat dangerously slow. Right now they are trying to shock her heart back into rhythm along with 100% O2. Once they stabilize her, they'll try to figure out what caused her oxygen levels to drop and treat that." He wraps a protective arm around me. "Also, Jacob has been waiting outside. I didn't want him to have to see her like this, but I've been giving him updates periodically."

I had totally forgotten about Jacob but once Carlisle mentions him I have tons of questions for him. "Do you think he would be up for a chat?" I ask.

He thinks for a moment before responding. "He can answer the basic questions, but don't be too hard on him. This isn't his fault either. It was a freak accident."

I nod and head for the door. As much as I want my questions answered, I miss the feeling of Carlisle's arms around my shoulders.

I find Jacob slumped in a chair right outside Bella's room. He looks up when I exit and straightens. "How is she? I saw all those people rush inside."

"Uhh Carlisle said something about low oxygen and heart rate. I think they'll be able to fix it, not sure about all the medical mumbo jumbo." I say as I take the seat right next to him. "What happened?"

He swallows hard before answering. "We went cliff jumping. She did a couple of the shortest jump and was totally fine. When she said she wanted to try the next one up we all thought she was ready for it, and we had swimmers at the bottom to grab her if she wasn't.

"She jumped and everything looked good, but she never came up. I don't know what happened entirely, only she could tell up that, but they found her with her leg tuck under a rock and the current banging her head into it. Thats how the head injury happened. She was under for a while, too long. We started CPR as soon as we could and called an ambulance and once she was in it I came and got you. I'm really sorry this happened. I know it was all my fault, she was one of my best friends and I hate that I did this to her." He buries his face in his hands.

As much as I want to comfort him, I can't help feeling that he's right. This is his fault. If he hadn't taken her cliff jumping she would be completely fine, if moody. I rub his back for a few seconds but say nothing.

I hear muffled shouting from the room and glance up. Carlisle is motioning me in with an urgency that can't be ignored. "I'll be right back." I tell Jacob before rushing into the room.

"What is it?"

Carlisle sighs, then pulls me into the room, closing the door behind us. "I'll let her doctors tell you."

I turn on the doctors. "Tell me what?" I glance at Bella, then stop and stare.

The tubes are gone. Or at least some of them are. "Why are they gone, the tubes why why aren't they attached."

The doctor looks at me sadly before motioning to the chair. "We did everything we could but  the damage to Bella's brain was too extensive. Your daughter is dead. I'm so sorry for you loss."

Everything goes white. All I hear are muffled sounds, all I see are blurry shapes and colors. The only things that still has focus is Carlisle's hand on my back. Than my arm. Then my face.
