People in movies always know where to find vampires right away. It takes them a couple of hours at most to find the vampires, and then a few minutes to defeat them. It took me almost a week to find the intruding coven. They are very good at hiding when they want to.
In the time it took me to find them, there were two more murders and the town was uneasy. Every detective and police officer in the county was on high alert, and I was working around the clock to find the vampires.
My big break finally came after four days. I'd been asking around town for anyone to tell me about a group of people who were new or just passing through town, and who seemed to avoid shade. The call came right as I was leaving work from the golf course. The manager had spotted a group who fit my description. He said they were on hole 4, and if I hurried I might make it there before the finished the front 9.
I made it just in time to see them cross the street. I could tell from a glacé that it was the coven that I'd been looking for. The Cullens had been MIA since I killed Esme, but I thought I saw Jesper watching them like a shadow in the woods.
I waited in the parking lot, hiding amongst the other cars there. My truck didn't exactly blend in, bur it was the best I could do. The vampires were crazy good at golf. I didn't watch them, but the speed with witch the finished the course was greater than I'd ever witnessed before.
It seemed like there were three leaders who were the ones really golfing, and the rest of the coven was coming and going.
I knew that taking on the coven as a group was impossible, and separating them all and killing them one by one would be challenging to say the least. I wondered absently how the Cullens usually dealt with wander covens like this one.
If I could get one of the leaders alone I might be able to destabilize the coven enough to get them to leave. They also might go out of control and start killing more people.
I followed the vampires around the rest of the day, always two blocks behind, and sometimes diverging and taking a different route. I managed not to lose them in the traffic, although their bright yellow and green Mazda didn't exactly blend in. I spent hours crafting plans. Some to get the coven leaders along, others to kill members of the coven. Some tried to control the coven, some to capture them. None of them seemed the least hit plausible.
I didn't have the speed or agility afforded by being a vampire, and I certainly didn't know enough to feel confident about any of my plans.
I found that the coven was camping out in a little green farm hose on the edge of town, and once I knew that I withdrew to my home to plot. I knew I couldn't defeat the vampires alone. I didn't have the means or experience to. I needed to bring in the Cullens and maybe even the wolf pack if the Cullens were even willing to help me.
