Dean

The last months of my borrowed year go fast. No one finds anything that can stop the demon from taking me to hell. Sam and I are in a motel the last night, I didn't want Bobby to have to see it. I didn't want Sam here either, but he insisted.

"How much longer?" I ask, pacing in front of the window.

"15 minutes until midnight, but we don't know if they'll send the hounds immediately."

I snort and my brother's optimism. "For me, the hounds will be out as soon as the clock strikes midnight."

"Ture." Sam says from where he's sitting on the bed.

I keep pacing by the window. This isn't going to be a pleasant or easy death. Hellhounds are anything but quick killers. Efficient yes, but they like the shred a little much for my taste. I flinch when I hear a howl outside.

"Is it time?" I ask Sam.

"No. You still have 5 minutes." He says, sitting up.

"You should go." I say, turning away from him. "You shouldn't have to see this. Plus, you could get caught in the crossfire."

"I'm not leaving you here alone to die, Dean." He says, frustration evident in his voice. "I can handle myself, as I've proven time and time again. I might be able to help you."

I shake my head, still not allowing myself to look at him. "They had to know that I'd out a fight. There's no way they only sent one hound. For the 'Dean Winchester' they probably sent all the hounds. I don't want you getting hurt because of me, Sammy. Please go somewhere safe."

I close my eyes when he walks up behind me, halting my pacing.

"I don't want to leave you to die Dean."

"You're not leaving me to die, you're making the smart choice!"

Sam pushes my shoulder forcing me to look at him. "Smart choice? Dean, since when have we ever made the smart choice? We make the right one, not the smart one. Not the easy one!"

"Believe me, this isn't the easy choice." I say, not meeting his eyes.

"So then let me stay! That's the easy choice, right?"

"I want you here Sammy, but because I love you, I can't let you be here. Find dad and stay with Bobby. You'll be fine without me."

"Dean." Sam says, voice breaking. "I'll never be fine without you."

I finally meet his gaze and put my hands on either side of his face. "You'll be fine without me. You never really needed me, I needed you. Don't do anything stupid when I'm gone ok? Promise me Sammy, nothing stupid."

I can see the tears streaking his face and can feel my own on my face. "I can't make that promise Dean. You're my brother."

"And as you bother, I'm asking you. Nothing stupid. Think of it as my dying wish or whatever, as long as you promise."

Sam shakes his head, but I make him look at me. "Promise me Sammy. I can't do this if you don't."

"I promise." He says, the last word catching.

I nod and release his face.

"Ok. Now go. You don't have much time before they're here and you really don't need to see this."

Sam shakes his head again. "I can't Dean. "

"Yes, you can." I push him towards the door. "Go Sammy. Please don't stay for this."

I can hear the hounds sniffing at the door now and know I don't have long to get him out of there.

"Take care of the car for me. Keep her safe for me." I sayshoving him towards the door again "I love you, Sammy."

"I love you." He says, backing towards the door finally.

"Remember your promise. Nothing stupid."

He nods and then finally leaves the room, locking the door behind him. I stare at the empty space where my brother used to be and wait.

I don't have to wait long. The Hellhounds burst through the door like it's nothing and then they're on me. I kept a knife for the reason and lash out at them, but it's no use. I didn't bother taking the glasses with me so I can't see them and it's hard to fight the air. It's not long before I start losing. I drop the knife and let the pain lead me into oblivion.
