I heard the twig snap, and turned around slowly to face the lake. On the other side was a wolf. The biggest wolf I'd ever seen. It was huge, at least as tall as I, and  heavy muscled. It had rippling black fur and golden eyes that seemed way too human like to be the eyes of a wolf. It's mouth was open in a snarl, and it's perfectly white teeth were long and looked wickedly sharp. It was crouched at the edge of the lake ready to pounce, and I had a sneaking suspicion that the twig had only cracked under its weight because it wanted me to turn.
That confused me. Why would a wolf want me to know about it's presence? Could a wolf even think like that? I wasn't sure. As the policed chief I had very minimal experience with wolves, or wild animals in general.
"Hey buddy. How are you today?" I said hands out in front of me, backing away slowly. The wolf growled somewhere deep in its throat.
I paled, still backing up. "Please don't eat me?" I tried.
The wolf followed me with its eyes and then took a slow, almost lazy, step towards me. I backed up two more, trying to put as much distance between me and it as I could. It growled again before standing on its hind legs and morphing.
The transition was seamless, black fur slowly receded back to human flesh. Limbs shrunk and contorted. Clothing appeared and suddenly a stunning Native American woman stood before me. Not just any woman, one of the leaders of the tribe.
Samantha Uley was one of the most influential members of the tribe. And she was also a werewolf? Werewolves. In Forks! I was still tripping over vampires, adding werewolves to that list didn't seem that far fetched anymore. She stalked toward me, and I looked at her feet. Heavy boots, hers were the foot prints around the lake.
"You smell like vamp." She said, closing the distance between us.
"I.. you're... what?" I stumbled over my words as she stood over me.
"You smell like vampire." She said again. "Stay away from them. I know you're curious about our world, but if you stop searching now you may still save your hide. If you won't leave Forks at least stop poking around the Cullens."
So I was right. They were vampires.
"You're a werewolf." I said, finally finding my voice.
She roles her eyes at me but answered anyway. "Yes, I'm a werewolf. The Alpha of the pack. You done?"
My mind was spinning in circles. Not only were werewolves real, but they were in my home town. A whole pack of them. Her question finally registered and I nodded.
"The safest thing for you to do would be to leave-"
"I'm not leaving." I said cutting off what ever she was going to say next.
She raised a brow and tapped her fingers impatiently against her hip where they rested.
"In that case, as I was saying, you need to stop poking around in business that isn't yours." Her gaze intensified. "Leave the Cullens the hell alone, and the pack too. We don't need you poking around and getting hurt. This is a war you can't win and don't want to get involved in."
"What do you mean 'war'?" I asked, confused once again, not that it's much of a change.
She growled and backed away from me. "I don't have time for this. Stay away from us and them unless you want to end up dead. This is the only warning. From here on out it's life or death. Don't waste your life, or whats left of it, on this."
With that she leaped over my head transforming as she went.
I was left in the mud on the edge of the lake trying to figure out how a walk that was supposed to clear my mind managed to make it more muddled than it was when I left the house.
I walked home slowly pondering the events of the day. When I finally got there I collapsed on the couch and fell asleep immediately, the tv still droning in the background.
