Soon, there was another knock on the door. I opened the door and Ariana was wheeled back in by Dr. Thompson and a nurse. She seemed really drowsy from all the meds they put her on. She was holding a piece of gauze close to her chest. I tried to take a closer look and realized that she was holding our baby on the gauze. Her eyes were still red and puffy.
"Everything went really well," Dr. Thompson began, "we'll have to keep her overnight to monitor her recovery and she can leave tomorrow. Her period is expected to return within eight weeks."
"D-do you know what the gender of the baby would've been?" I asked.
"A little boy," she answered and Ariana began to sob again. She really wanted a baby boy. I kneeled down next to her and wrapped my arms around her. Dr. Thompson and the nurse then left to give us some privacy.
Ariana's pov
When Dr. Thompson said that we would've had a little boy, my heart sunk. I really wanted a little boy, but now he's gone. I started sobbing again and Dalton kneeled down next to me as he wrapped his arms around me. I held our baby boy closer to my chest. He's really pale and small, just slightly smaller than my hand. He's innocent, but he had to be gone.
"I'm so s-sorry, my baby b-boy, Mommy l-loves y-you," I cried and softly kissed our son.
I passed him to Dalton and he held him in his hand, holding him closer to his chest.
"Daddy loves you, little one, until we meet again in heaven," he said and softly kissed him.
"Imogen, wanna come and say goodbye to the baby?" Dalton asked. She nodded and came closer. Her eyes were also red and puffy. She must've been crying too.
"Goodbye baby, I hope I can see you again, I wuv you," she said sadly and kissed her little brother. We got to spend a few more minutes with our son before we had to hand him to the doctor so that he could be preserved. We would take him home and bury him.
"Ariana, I guess I'll have to leave now," Taylor said, "you'll have to rest so that you can get better soon."
"Me too, I'll let you rest," Tommy said and I lightly nodded.
"T-thank you for h-helping me earlier," I replied.
"You're welcome," they both replied, "we'll see you soon, Ariana."
They left, leaving only me, Dalton, and Imogen in the room. The room was quiet. No one said a thing, not even Imogen. That's until I decided to break the silence.
"M-Malcolm's gonna take c-care of our b-baby, r-right?" I sniffled.
"He will, baby, I promise," he reassured, "he will always be watching over you, along with Ella and our little boy. They're all really proud of you."
I placed my head on the pillow and closed my eyes as I tried to get comfortable. My eyelids felt heavy, because the medicines they gave me made me really drowsy. Dalton held my hand and rubbed his thumb across it, calming me down. Soon, the medicines had full control of my body and I eventually fell asleep.
Dalton's pov
"Daddy?" Imogen called as Ariana drifted off to sleep.
"Yes, little one?"
"Is Mommy mad?"
"No, little one," I answered, running my fingers through her curls, "Mommy's just really sad that the baby's gone."
"Oh."
"Can I please ask one thing from you?"
"Yes Daddy?"
"Please don't ask Mommy anything about the baby, she's really sad, we need to give her some time to feel better."
"Okay Daddy."
There was a knock on the door and I stood up to open it. It was Joan. I let her in and she sat down on one of the chairs.
"I'm sorry for being late, I was stuck in a traffic jam."
"That's okay," I lightly smiled.
"Is my daughter okay?" she asked, worried.
"She just had a procedure to get the baby out of her body, she's now asleep because the medicines made her drowsy," I explained and she nodded.
"Imogen, are you okay?" she asked, noticing her puffy eyes.
"No, the baby's gone," she looked down. Joan picked her up and placed her on her lap.
"I know you're also sad, but be strong for Mommy, okay?"
"Okay, Nonna."
Imogen was also starting to get sleepy since it's her naptime. She eventually fell asleep in Joan's arms. She's really mature for her age. I felt bad that she had to go through so much at such a young age. I couldn't blame Ariana, because things had never been easy for her either. As a dad, I should protect them both at all costs.
"How did she react to the news?" Joan asked.
"She had been crying the whole time. Earlier, she said something about not worthy of being loved and wanting to die."
"Please keep a close eye on her," she warned, "she has a history of cutting herself. She had even attempted to kill herself."
"I will, don't worry," I reassured. Deep inside, I was so worried. I knew about her history of cutting. She told me about it two years ago. What scared me the most was her suicide attempt. I would never heal if I lost her to suicide. She's everything to me.
a few hours later...
Ariana's pov
My eyes slowly fluttered open and Dalton was holding my hand. I saw my mom on the other side of the room, Imogen asleep on her lap.
"D-Dalton?" my voice croaked.
"Yes baby? Do you need anything?"
"I-I just need our baby boy to come back," I started to cry again.
"Baby," tears filled his eyes, "I'm so sorry, I can't bring him back."
"I need him back," I cried.
"I'm so sorry baby," he held me in his arms as a tear rolled down his cheek. Why should I even exist? I'm always a burden to everyone around me.
