I buried my face on my knees, too scared of what's gonna happen next. There's no way I'm losing her. She's my true love. My hands were shaking as I tried to get my phone out of my pocket. I clicked on Joan's contact and called her.
"Hi Dalton, is everything okay?"
"A-Ariana tried to k-kill herself, she o-overdosed and is now in the h-hospital."
"I'm coming," she said before hanging up. Imogen buried her face on my chest as she started to cry again. I missed her so much. I just hope she would make it. I took out the note she left and started reading it.
dear dalton,
thank you so much for everything you had done for me the past two and a half years. i love you and imogen so much, but i can't take this pain anymore. i'm tired of having to be in pain all the time. everyone i love keep on dying, i don't want anything bad to happen to you or our daughter. please take a good care of imogen. i'm so sorry for all the pain i put you through. it's all over now, i'm going with our son. i hope we'll meet again someday. i love you.your wife,
arianaI held the letter close to my chest and started sobbing. Seeing me in this state, Imogen also started to cry. I held her tight and we both cried together.
"W-where's my daughter?" Joan came rushing, looking so worried.
"Still in the emergency room," I looked down.
"H-How did this h-happen?" she started to cry.
"S-she did it when I was asleep, I thought she was also asleep, b-but she wasn't. Imogen f-found her and she was already u-unconscious. I'm so s-sorry, I shouldn't have fallen asleep," I cried.
"Don't blame yourself, Dalton," she rubbed my back, "I know the past few days had also been exhausting for you. I couldn't blame you for falling asleep, you also needed to rest."
I cried harder at the thought of how traumatized Imogen must've been finding her mother in that state. My poor daughter. She's not even two, but she had to go through so much.
"Daddy, I'm scared," Imogen cried on my chest.
"I know, little one, Nonna and Daddy are scared too, but we have to be strong for Mommy, okay?" I replied. She lightly nodded. Joan then called the rest of her family. Frankie's on the way to the hospital, while Nonna and her dad were flying all the way from Boca Raton to LA.
"Where's my sister?" Frankie asked as soon as he arrived.
"She's in the emergency room," Joan answered.
"There's no way this is happening to her right now," he looked down as tears filled his eyes. We waited again for about an hour until the door creaked open. A doctor walked out with a clipboard in her hand. It was Dr. Thompson.
"Any direct family of Ariana?" she asked.
"We're all her family," Joan stood up, "How is she doing?"
"She ingested so much of the substance that it caused a potentially permanent brain damage. We have emptied her stomach and managed to get rid of some of the substance in her system. She is in the intensive care unit. She is now in a coma and can't breathe on her own, so we had to put her on a ventilator. We had to hook her to a lot of machines to keep her alive. You are very lucky to find her quick enough. She wouldn't have survived if you're a few minutes late."
I cried harder at the thought of her not being able to breathe on her own. Imogen saved her life. If she's didn't find her, I would already lose her by now. She would never understand how much it means to me.
"I-is she going to make it?" I asked her, trying not to cry.
"We can't tell for sure right now. She's in a critical condition, and her survival chances are low, but I promise, we'll try everything to save her."
"T-thank you."
"You may now see her, follow me," she said and we followed behind her. She led us to a room and opened the door. We then walked into the room. The sight broke my heart. Ariana was really pale and still. She was hooked into wires connected to machines to keep her alive. She was put on a ventilator to help her breathe. There was an IV line connected to her hand. All of those machines around her small body made her look even more vulnerable. The doctor then left to give us some privacy.
I sat down on the chair next to her bed and held her hand. A tear rolled down my cheek. My heart shattered into pieces seeing the love of my life in this condition.
"Baby, I don't know if you can hear me, but just know that I love you so much. Please don't leave me, I can't live without you," I softly cried. I gently kissed her hand. She wasn't moving at all. Imogen sat down on my lap and placed her head on my chest.
"Daddy," she looked up, "is Mommy sleeping?"
"She's not sleeping, she's just really sick that she can't wake up," I explained.
"When will she wake up?"
"I don't know yet, Imogen, but she's gonna wake up when she feels better."
"Oh."
"Can Mommy hear me?" she asked.
"I don't know, but you can try talking to her. She might be able to hear you."
"Mommy, pwease wake up, I wuv you," she teared up and my heart broke. She couldn't lose her mother. She's not even two. Her life just began.
"Mommy?" she cried. Still, there was no response from Ariana.
"Daddy?" she looked up. "Yes little one?"
"Is Mommy going to die?" she asked and I broke down crying at the thought of her dying.
"Daddy?"
"I-I don't know, Imogen. Let's just pray for her, okay?"
She lightly nodded and placed her head on my chest, something Ariana would do when she's upset. Imogen cried harder and I tried to calm her down while trying to hold in my own tears. Joan's tears were freely falling. Why did I let this happen? I shouldn't have fallen asleep and none of these would be happening. If Imogen lost her mother, her parents lost their daughter, Frankie lost her sister, and her fans lost their idol, I'm the one to blame.
