(Y/N)'s life was rather average as an 18 year old who had just graduated from high school. They had plans to go to college in the fall, had a group of friends who would be going elsewhere to study different things, and had absolutely no idea what it was they planned to do for a living once they got a degree.

But what they did have was a fascination with entomology.

Bugs were cool as long as they were on a screen and not in real life. (Y/N) had used the internet to research various kinds of insects and, while the closest thing their high school had offered to entomology was AP Biology, learned enough about many legged creatures with exoskeletons to be able to identify what species something was.

Though that wasn't why they decided to finally try and be independent and go camping on a small site in the desert by themself, which they weren't too confident was a good idea to begin with. It probably wasn't. But no one else in their family had wanted to go when they said they were going, so that's why they had gone alone.

It was definitely a good thing they got a campsite with small cabins because they were pretty hopeless when it came to setting up a tent. So many poles were confusing and it wasn't uncommon that they had asked someone else for help on the trips they had gone on before, failing to understand no matter how simple someone tried to make it for them.

So after getting settled in, they decided to get a good look around the area, maybe see if there were any hiking trails or other interesting things nearby.
They had brought a camera to take pictures to show their friends and family later, so they were planning on finding something they wanted to remember.

With a small bag filled with snacks and water, they set out to look around. After a few minutes they had found a few small animals, like lizards and birds, that they snagged pictures of before continuing.

But as they continued in their chosen direction, they wind was picking up speed and the sand was being blown around enough that they couldn't see anything. Trying to turn around and go back was worse than just continuing forward, so they decided to see where they wind took them before it calmed down enough that they could go back.

Finally making it to a small, sheltered cave, they sat down, almost completely exhausted from all the walking, and decided to look through the photos they had taken on the camera.

Good thing they did too or they would've missed being able to take the first photo they thought was incredible. However, reflexes on taking pictures are not something to brag about.

That didn't mean that the large creature that quietly wandered out to see them wasn't a cool picture. It immediately shielded its eyes at the flash produced by the camera in (Y/N)'s hands.

After realizing that they weren't entirely certain what the thing they had gotten a picture of was, the human became perfectly still, not wanting to agitate it and end up getting eaten or something. They followed its movements with their eyes rather than with their head.

It seemed to be just as scared that there was going to be another sudden flash of light. Its large body slowly approaching at a cautious rate with clear fear, which gave (Y/N) enough time to study its bizarre appearance.

If anything, it looked like an enormous humanoid stag beetle. At least, the large structure atop what appeared to be its face looked like the jaws of a stag, though its coloration was very wrong. A pure white and cracked head with a single pitch black arm with the same color legs.

It took a few minutes for (Y/N) to realize that it was poking them gently with said hand and was close enough that they could touch its broken face. Once they did, they nearly screamed and fell over, with a tight grasp stopping them from hitting the ground.
