"Emilia! Time for dinner, come inside!"
Emilia Orsini let out a loud cheer, already imagining the taste of cheese from her mother's famous sfincione. Letting go of her toy shovel, she wiped her muddy hands on her jumper, turning the clean blue jumper into a dirty artwork.
She ran back into the house, and in doing so, crashed into her older siblings, making them exclaim in protest. Her sister, Rozalia glared at her, walking off to help their mother set the table while her brother, Santino only laughed.
"Where have you been, piantagrane?" Santino lifted her upon his shoulders.
Emilia giggled, tugging at her older brother's hair. "I was digging for treasure. I wasn't causing any trouble!"
"Oh yeah?" He teased before making her hang upside down his shoulders like a bat.
Loud squeals escaped her lips. "Stop! Put me down!"
"Santino put your sister down before she gets sick." A loud commanding voice echoed from the other side of the room.
Emilia, from her upside-down view, caught sight of their father, making another smile appear on her face. "Papà!"
Ricardo Orsini, head of the Orsini empire, was known as a cold man. He had commanded the deaths of hundreds, committed the worse of crimes, and even led others into doing the same. The man who was famous for tying a rival to a tree, drenching him in honey, and releasing a hive of bees upon him.
A trained killer who does not take no for an answer. At least, that was how he treated everyone apart from his family. He may be the worst of his sort but to his darling daughter, who he loved to spoil with toys and candies, he was her hero.
Taking his youngest daughter from his son, Ricardo smiled down at her. "And how are you today, Emilia?"
"I found treasure, Papà! Lots of treasure in the backyard!" Emilia boasted, stretching out her arms to show him just how much.
Treasure, of course, in the form of colorful leaves, smooth rocks, and pretty pinecones.
"Lots of treasure, huh? But did you find a unicorn?" He asked, raising a brow in question before putting her down and pulling out a small stuffed unicorn.
She hurriedly hugged her father's leg. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."
Emilia took the unicorn from her father, showing it off to everyone in the house.
Ricardo Orsini smiled after her, murmuring to himself. "Oh little Emilia, how I wish that you'd never grow up."
Moments after he said that, the doorbell to their house rang, signaling that there was someone at the door.
