Battle of Conscience
The three continued rummaging through the pictures, worried looks across all their faces.
"Whoever's doing this has traced us all. Who could have this much power?" Sean wondered out loud.
Emilia shook her head. "I don't know. Finn was the head of everything. I thought the Wallaces were the ones in power."
"We are," Sean assured though he looked quite conflicted. "We are in power."
Before either Emilia or Elliot could reply, a bark sounded through the air, followed by a child's voice.
"Baxter! Mum, I'm back! Mum?" The child called out, looking around the house for his mum.
Emilia moved to walk outside, tucking her gun back in her holster, keeping it hidden by her jacket. She saw Sean with his weapon still up and she nudged him, gesturing for him to keep it.
Elliot went ahead of them, seeing the blonde child who seemed startled at the sight of three grown adults in his house.
"Hey," Elliot greeted. "How you doing?"
"Who are you? Where's my mum?" The child asked, looking at the three of them. Not in suspicion but more in fear.
Sean did nothing to quell the fear by answering ominously. "Don't worry about that."
Emilia moved to step on his shoe, making him grunt in surprise and look at her in shock. She only glared at him. He didn't have to scare the poor kid.
"What he means to say, is we're here because we are-" She trailed off, not knowing what excuse to use.
Elliot came to her rescue by saying. "We are police officers."
"Yes, we came because your mum's been reported as missing." She agreed, continuing the story.
Better to tell him that, than to tell him that her boyfriend has been torturing his mum for answers. That his mum's screams had already been engraved in her mind.
"What's happened to her?" The kid questioned, worried.
Elliot feigned confusion, seeming at a loss. If he wasn't working for them, he could have a career as an actor. "We don't know. That's why we're here."
"Your name's Felix, right? My name's Emilia." She stepped forward offering a hand for little Felix to shake.
"I'm Elliot," Elliot added, turning to Sean who only nodded. "Let me help you with your bag, that looks really heavy. You've been on a trip?"
Felix replied, bobbing his head in confirmation. "Yeah, I go to boarding school."
"What a coincidence, I used to go to boarding school too," Emilia said, trying to comfort the kid by mentioning something familiar and putting a hand on his shoulder. "What about your little sister, does she go to boarding school too?"
