"Want anything from the kitchen, love?"

"Wanna help me bake this cake?" Billy added, stirring in more vanilla extract than needed, liking the aroma and smell of it.

When Emilia didn't reply, both brothers turned to look at the blonde girl sitting on the couch, a laptop in front of her as she replied to emails wordlessly. Earphones covering her ears as she complained a few days ago that she didn't like listening to the Platters.

Emilia may have liked the song, Only You, but she could only listen to it a few times before descending into madness. She made it through the first hour however after that, she decided to put on some earphones to listen to something else.

Billy sighed at the sight of her, stirring his cake. "She's been like that since seven in the morning. Every morning, really. Always on that thing."

"Has she?" Sean asked, not having noticed her habits what with his thoughts being preoccupied with a certain polaroid of a dead child. "I hadn't realized."

They had developed a routine between them. Every morning, Emilia would wake up first to do some work, and a cup of coffee to wake her up. Sean would follow after, to have some breakfast and to observe the interrogation.

She would work all day and so would he, the two of them only meeting at night. The cover of the night provided them solace and in each other's arms, they lost themselves, only remembering the other's touch. The other's whispers, calling out each other's names in the dark.

Then the day would begin all over again. Like a cycle of an unending descent into madness and chaos. It certainly felt like it.

"Course you haven't," Billy replied, going back to stirring his batter, preparing to place it in the oven.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Sean questioned, raising a brow at his brother.

Billy shrugged, setting a timer. "You haven't exactly been present. You may be here with us, but your mind. It's elsewhere."

Sean exhaled, realizing that his brother was right. He hadn't been paying enough attention to her, focusing too much on his own problems and failing to see what she was going through.

Sean walked toward the living room, tapping her once on the shoulder. "Lia, hey. Come back to me, love."

Emilia jumped, closing her laptop and taking off her earphones in a rush. "Hey. Didn't know you were awake."

"I've been in the kitchen for an hour, Lia." He deadpanned, making her chuckle.

She shook her head, amused with herself. "Sorry, can't see much in the morning without my glasses."
