Crash and Burn
Emilia hadn't been able to stop smiling.
She didn't think she could ever stop smiling. Not that she wanted to, of course. It had been rare for her to experience such surreal joy.
Ever since Sean's proposal at the cafe, he had been perfect. In fact, everything had been perfect. They continued the meal with shared smiles and easy laughs. The cafe had served them dessert on the house, with chocolate syrup spelling out the word, 'Congratulations'.
They left the simple cafe with a wave at the owner, an old woman who had gleefully waved back. That place would always have a place in her heart, both their hearts really.
Even now, she couldn't wait for the next few months to pass by and perhaps on a single day when they weren't busy with things like business, they would be able to return and enjoy the delicious pastries and warm company once again.
Her eyes gazed over the band around her finger, tracing each and every detail, from the diamond rose to the jewels surrounding it. What especially caught her attention was the words engraved on the inside of the band.
'But never doubt I love. Never again.'
"What does it mean?" Emilia asked curiously, her fingers tracing over the words before turning her attention to Sean who had a knowing smile on his face.
"You don't find it familiar?" Sean grinned, clearly amused that he knew something she didn't.
"No, I don't think so." She shook her head, repeating the words under her breath. That was when it dawned upon her. "Wait. 'Never again'. Those were the words we exchanged that night, the night of the dinner. It was when you told me you loved me."
"That's right." He confirmed, driving the car at a leisurely pace as they headed on their way to the Wallace Tower.
It was a wonder how they had known each other for so long but only now, in so little time, were they trying to make up for all the years they spent apart.
She found herself asking, the questions still lingering in her mind. "Where did you get the first one from? 'But never doubt I love'?"
"Do you remember our favorite book?" He smiled mischievously, recalling all the things they went through to be recorded in a small notebook.
"I don't recall that you particularly like reading." She shrugged, thinking of the number of books that Sean has read over the years. Most of them were schoolbooks that he never even opened for anything other than homework or making book towers with her. He opened hymnbooks for church but she didn't think that he would gift her a ring with a line from a hymnbook.
"We didn't exactly read this one, Lia." He rolled his eyes playfully, giving her another hint.
She didn't realize it at first but suddenly she gasped, the thought of the book tucked in her mattress in the Wallace home. "Oh! Hamlet! The play, the one we used to write on when we were bored. Our entries."
