Cloak-and-dagger activities
Emilia had finished her tea by the time Elliot ventured outside.
No more football games had taken place. Besides, she knew that when the family returned to that house, the kids would probably still want a ball to play with.
Not the mushy excuse for a ball that Baxter seemed to have taken a liking to, the dog pushing it around despite its deflated state.
"Taking a bullet for me, why'd you do it?" Sean asked once he spotted Elliot walking down the steps that Emilia was currently sitting on.
Elliot explained as he reached the bottom of the steps. "If you're dead, I'm out of a job aren't I?"
"Or there's part of you that doesn't want to live," Sean said, his eyes narrowing at the man, trying to decipher what it was about him. "Can't work you out."
"What do you mean?" Elliot questioned, his face contorting into confusion, almost like he didn't know what Sean was talking about.
"He means, what do you want from him? Honestly, I want to know the same thing. What do you hope to gain from all this?" Emilia expounded, standing up to join the two men, flanking her boyfriend protectively.
From the outside, it looked as if she were curling up against him to protect herself when in reality, she was staying close to him, should the need to protect him arose and she can throw herself in front of him. It was a beautiful sentiment.
"Protection. For Shannon and Danny." Elliot disclosed, his face showing nothing but sincerity. It seems as if one of Sean's men fell for the Dumani. If their situation weren't so dire, she would've called Shannon to make her divulge more information about their relationship. "More protection."
"That's it?" Sean seemed surprised before agreeing, a mischievous smile on his face. "Done. Shannon's been looking out for you, yeah?"
"Don't be cheeky, Sean. You're one to talk." Emilia defended, though a hint of a smile played at her lips.
Elliot's serious expression remained, showing how worried he was. About them, maybe. Or maybe he was just focused on keeping them alive as his job entailed. "Who'd you think is doing this? Doesn't point to any of the gangs we know. Sean, Emilia, they got into your house."
"Are you close to your dad, Elliot?" Sean asked, going on to tell him about Finn Wallace and remembering both the good and bad. Although, with what had recently come to light, the bad seemed to outweigh the good. "Mine would push and push, show me how to go further. Make me go further. Do things I didn't think I could do."
"You know what, and I mean this with the most utmost respect, your dad sounds like a bit of a cunt." Elliot revealed, his words frank.
It was silent as Sean stared at him with no emotion, his own mind whirring with emotion after hearing the same opinion of his father from various people he trusted.
