Fledgling

The bodies standing in faultless lines

Move unanimously at a simple command

And I, supposed to fit in only newly

As I trip over their feet trying in vain to copy their fluid motion

Their beautiful ceramic faces look down at me in disdain

I sprawl on the floor, looking up at them

As they roll their polished glassy eyes, laugh chiming echoes, and move away

Tears sting my eyes in frustration;

Couldn't they understand?

There was a time they only had downy feathers and scrawny feet.

Thunder clapped and rain began to fall

And as they danced the lightning struck them,

One by one until they fell

I sought to take shelter under their fallen stained glass wings

But the rain touched them, exploding in showers of colorful dust.

As the lightning melted the ceramic faces

I was left alone to one thought

I could not be like them;

I would have to grow my own wings

And so I did.
