Bellatrix's accomplice

Chapter 13

We hadn't been back at Hogwarts long when Tom asked us to meet him in a bathroom. Quite specifically, the bathroom in which a girl was always crying.

Tom has become quite a good friend to us. We don't yet understand him as he is very unpredictable but we get along just fine.

The odd thing this time was that he handed us a book with no explanation. We shrugged it off and made our way to the bathroom, Bella was clutching the book as we walked there.

We headed inside and almost immediately we could hear sniffling coming from inside one of the cubicles. "We should hide Bella" I whispered. And as we did, we heard Myrtle shout "who's there?" we laughed almost too loudly because Myrtle came out of the cubicle and into the open.

The next thing I knew, Bellatrix threw Tom's book at the girl. She yelped but something strange happened. As we uncovered ourselves, her expression froze and she fell backwards. Bella and I exchanged confused and worried looks but then we heard a voice behind us.

"Brilliant isn't it?" we turned around and Tom was stood before us. "What is brilliant? What's happened to her" I asked bluntly. He laughed, "she is dead" I gave Bella an 'is he for real' look and she nodded slowly.

He paced closer to Myrtle's body. "She saw my pet" "pet?" Bella asked in confusion. He turned around smiling. "It's a Basilisk"

My eyes widened, I'd heard of them before but thought that they were mythical. "She must have looked it in the eye" he said, kicking her with his foot. "But we didn't see a Basilisk" Bella whispered. She was clearly scared as we could both have looked at it and died.

"That is because it travels through the pipes, under this very bathroom" we were shocked that there was an actual living serpent in the castle. "Besides, I am the only one able to control it" he laughed. I didn't know how to react, Bella just laughed "is there really a fifty-foot snake in the castle?"

Tom shot her a menacing look, "Bellatrix, must I remind you that it is not a snake. And yes there is, you just watched her die at the hands of it" he yelled. "Keep your voice down Tom, we might be heard. We need to leave" I said, gesturing towards Myrtle's lifeless body.

Tom nodded his head once and walked out of the bathroom. We swiftly followed him and we made our way back to the Slytherin common room. "So what was the book for?" I asked Tom as we walked into the empty common room.

"Firstly Y/N, it isn't just a book. It is a diary. And secondly, I was going to use it to show you how to get into the chamber of secrets but Moaning Myrtle was present so she met her fate" I laughed at his bluntness. "So you killed the girl because she always cries in that bathroom?"

He smirked, "partially, yes. I will have to show you another time. Maybe you can meet my basilisk" he smirked.

"I think we will give that a pass Tom, thanks though" I answered for both of us and dragged Bella to our dorm.

"Shouldn't we have done something about her body?" Bella asked just before we walked inside. I shook my head, "shh, Dolores might hear us and we could get in serious trouble" I whispered.

She nodded as we walked into our dorm to find Dolores sound asleep, which was a relief.
