She was running through a meadow;
It was just the break of dawn.
Toes pushed against the dewy grass,
No shoes or sandals on.
Sun shined over the hill,
Like a golden beam of light.
Running fast, and wild, and free,
With each step she took flight.
In an instant she awoke;
Eyes opened wide, and sat up straight.
And all she saw was darkness,
Her body pressed against the gate.
Frigid air stung her throat.
Tightened shackles bound her hands.
Quickened pulse-rate as her heart
Tried to meet her lungs' demands.
She screamed out but no one heard,
Because her voice, she could not find.
She had been forever trapped
In the prison of her mind.
