- Chapter Twenty-One -
"No need to repeat yourself, I ignored you fine the first time."IF ANYONE WANTED TO SEE awkwardness, loathing and unpleasantry all at once, all they had to do was look at James Potter and Sherry Opal sat next to each other in their Defence Against The Dark Arts class.
The atmosphere at the desk was one of a multitude of unspoken insults, hesitant movements and vexatious, disgusted glances. Fingers tapping at the table, extravagant sighs made to cause the other annoyance, tapping feet, hair twirling, glasses adjusting, muttering and also eye rolling. If one of them lifted a finger even the tiniest bit, the other would roll their eyes at just a simple movement from their irksome desk partner. Their chairs had been moved the furthest away from each other they could get but both would prefer to be on the other side of the classroom and away from the bother next to them.
Mrs. Greene had seemed to have missed the soft thuds of someone at the back of the classroom hitting the table in frustration whilst teaching, instead continuing to instruct the class to get their books out and turn to a certain page. Everyone had, even the two irritated desk partners yet they did it slowly, purposely making sure the other knew that they didn't want to be there. Of course, both already knew that and just did the same to spite them. Two copies of the same book sat atop the table, Potter's was cleaner and newer, the cover glossier whilst Sherry's was practically falling apart.
Lyall had given her his old books from when he went to school, every single one of them was just as nearly broken as the last. But Sherry didn't have any British wizarding money and the Lupin family could barely afford Remus' new books and Sherry's school uniform anyway, never mind the added set of new books. Sherry didn't really mind, of course she was stickler for new things...she was very materialistic but she knew what struggle felt like, she had seen it in her mother and herself so she didn't complain at all.
Potter liked to show off though and that was what made her annoyed, he handled his book with such care as though making sure that she'd see how good a condition his own one is and Sherry wondered that if she had had the new set and Remus had had the old set, how different he would act. She supposed it was good he was only using it to annoy her and not to poke fun at the Lupin's lack of money even though that was exactly what he was doing. Maybe not intentionally but still.
So she only smirked, letting him worry about the look on her face for just a moment as she opened the damaged book to the page number Mrs. Greene had written on the blackboard and then under it, Tongue-Tying Curse.
"The Tongue-Tying Curse, also known as the Tongue-Tying Spell, is a curse that ties the target's tongue in a knot, preventing them from making coherent speech." The woman spoke, surveying the class as they lazily turned their pages in their books. "Professor Vindictus Viridian, the author of the book Curses and Counter-Curses which should be on your desks now, covered them, how it works, how the spell is pronounced and how the wand is used. But before we get onto the practicing, can someone tell me what the Tongue-Tying Curse is mainly used for?"
