"HOW STUPID ARE YOU, PRONGS?"

"It wasn't my fault." James Potter lay comfortably back on one of the crimson sofa's in the Gryffindor Common Room the night of Slughorn's first meeting. He held a damp towel to his eye and had his other hand resting upon his chest, avoiding the wet spillage of blood on his fancy shirt.

"Beg to differ." Lily Evans mumbled from where she sat on one of the armchairs in the common room, still in her pink dress. The lounging area had been taken up by the sixth-year Gryffindors, some in fancy clothes and others in pyjamas but all of them staring at their damaged friend on the sofa.

"It wasn't." The hurt boy defended himself, seething slightly and Lily sighed to herself. "I tried to walk away but he just...he just kept going."

The room persuaded into silence, all of them remembering the events that had taken place earlier that evening. Professor Slughorn hadn't judged the guests of his dinner party very well for as soon as it was over, two of them had engaged in a physical altercation out in the hallway about another guest who had left early.

Sat there, James knew that everyone blamed him. Everyone thought that it was his fault he had a black eye, his fault that the secret had gotten out to everyone and his fault that his relationship with Sherry would probably be back to scraps when she woke up in the morning. Or maybe even now.

"Do you think she knows?" He broke the silence and he didn't need to open his eyes to know that everyone around him was sharing an awkward look with one another.

It wasn't long until the obvious news of James' crush had gotten out among the sixth-year Gryffindors. Lily had guessed, told Marlene who then told the rest of the girls and Sirius who then laughed at James for about an hour which lead to Peter and then Remus finding out. Remus claimed he already knew.

They all promised that they'd keep it a secret but James didn't care about that anymore, the most important person knew so he didn't need to hide it from anyone. Only to protect his own bravado but he would sell every ounce of his reputation for Sherry to forgive him and talk to him again.

Now she never might. Thanks to his own stupidity. And Matt Rowleys. The thought of the boy made him angry all over again and he slowly began to forgive himself over the fight they had.

"I think she'll find out in the morning." Remus said honestly and James blinked up at the ceiling, finally opening his eyes and squinting at the light. "Amber said that she was fine, just a little bit shaken up and then she took her up to bed before coming back to the dinner."

"Ambers gonna kill me." James whined. In the middle of the fight, he had looked up to see her face staring at it. Barely any emotion at all. "She said that I should leave it and give it time and let it fester but now I fucking beat up her ex and the secrets out and-"
