Disclaimer: I don't own this video, Tolkien's work or Peter Jackson's characters. In fact, as a general disclaimer, I don't own ANY of the videos and music used throughout this story.

Initially, I wanted to write this following my story Mirkwood but from Thranduil's POV. It then turned into something else as other ideas came into my mind but it does follow a common narrative line in early chapters with Mirkwood. Light and Shadows, however, is much more complex and atmospheric as it turned out and I had the opportunity to explore the characters in-depth.

This story is based on both the movie lore and the book lore and will include a lot of introspection/reflection of the characters' inner world and I feel Thranduil, being such a tragic and complex character, is so fitting for this... There will also be background stories revealed, relationship dynamics explored and a lot of drama!!!

DEDICATED TO ALL THRANDUIL FANS... and the THRANDIEL ONES!

Anyway, here is the premise from which the story starts:

I have seen (yet again!) the BOTFA movie and I noticed something that made me look at the final scenes between Legolas, Thranduil and Tauriel in a different way. First of all, Legolas seemed pissed with Tauriel after he stopped his father from threatening her with the sword (yeah you can see it on his face and then all the way until the end of the movie). I don't think it was just Tauriel going after Kili, because Legolas knew about Kili before... Also, he knew Thranduil was going to go look for Tauriel (when he had the little goodbye chat with him) but still, he did not care, he left and seemed pissed with both of them.

What if he realized that Tauriel had some kind of feelings for Thranduil (and Thranduil for her) as soon as he saw their confrontation and their talk on love? What if Legolas left because he realised there's something more going on between them... and Thranduil suspects this? But is Thranduil ready to admit to it? Here's the first chapter which follows the aftermath of the Battle of the Five Armies...

The late afternoon shadow was falling upon the Woodland Realm halls. Thranduil was looking through the opening in the stone wall of his chamber towards the darkness of the forest, his mind filled with many things. The battle of Dale had just ended yet he could not find rest or solace in the aftermath. As his kingdom was recovering from the fighting and losses, his heart was heavier than it had ever been.

His son, Legolas, was gone. Almost half of his army had been decimated. War was upon them again and there was no escape. However, what hurt him the most were the consequences of his own foolish feelings and actions. Along with the many losses of the battle, he also lost his son. He knew he was to blame for it but he was not the only one. Tauriel... the reckless elleth that had abandoned her post and humiliated him in front of his new captain and the whole company. The elleth that his son had feelings for and that failed to return these feelings. Thranduil knew that both he and she were to blame for making Legolas feel unloved and for his departure.
