Zag

"Nobody's nice to us, are they?"

" 'No, Zag, nobody's your friend, nobody but me'," we move Fred's jaw bone to make him talk to us. We were so glad when our father gave us Fred as a friend. We didn't have one before. Not one who said anything we liked.

"Zag----what are you doing?" our father stops in our bedroom doorway.

"Having a chat with Fred," we say, tossing Fred up in the air and catching him.

"I've been thinking, you are rather lonely down here, aren't you?"

"Oh yes, yes, we are, we could be good, we know it," we slink off the bed and kneel at his feet hopefully.

"There would be conditions, of course. But I don't see why you couldn't go play with your cousins---"

"Could we? Could we stab some of them?"

"As I said. Conditions, however your mother has a point. You can't stay locked up here forever."

"We only want to have fun," we say, nodding.

"I know. Get up---let's talk."
