Sleep

In my dreams the darkness comes.

But I push it away.

"Thank you for letting me see her," she says, quietly, as we stand upon the hill.

"Of course," I say, watching as the girls practice with their bows, happily running to go fetch their arrows from the bales of hay they use for target practice.

"How did she hurt her arm?" she asks, noticing a thick bandage.

"Oh um---just hunting," I lie. I know it was in the Battle of Times Square.

She shakes her head.

"Just little girls. She's happy."

"Yes, she is."

Unleasher

I wake up to the sound of the waves. As well as a knocking on my door.

"You've got five minutes before I wake you up with ---okay you'd be into a bucket of water, how about a bucket of salt?"

"I'm up," I say, hopping up and going to open the door. My dad is still in his clothes from the night before. Doesn't look like he's slept.

"Good. I made breakfast, hurry up," he says, messing up my already messy hair.

"I'm going swimming after school," I shout, as I hurriedly get dressed. I'd rather go swimming than go to school.

"You'll do your homework first," he says, as I nearly run into him in the hall.

"I'm caught up—I'm done," I say, shouldering my backpack.

"Well you might get something new, come here," he adjusts the scarf on my neck.

"It's fine," I say, even though it's not.

"Anybody say anything yet?"

"No. I don't think anyone has really noticed. If the scarf slips I usually feel it," I say, shifting a little.

"I swear that thing's getting worse," he sighs, finishing tying it for me.

"Yeah, I know. I have it on good authority I'm not turning into a sea monster," I say, amused.

"You'd better not. I'd keep you in a little tank," he says, hugging me, "Now come on. Eat up. I'll drive you."

"You don't have to-" He doesn't know how to drive. Not in this country.

"I know how to drive so yes-----in fact you can drive us. You need the practice."

"I don't want to practice, I want to go swimming," I laugh, following him downstairs.

"An hour each, deal?"

"Deal."

Justice

I wake up suddenly these days. Usually it's nightmares. Those don't go away it seems.

"You didn't have to get up," my mom says, coming into the nursery behind me.

"It's okay, he just wanted a cuddle," I say, giving my little brother a kiss on his sweet fat baby cheeks. He's already dozing back off. "I don't mind."

"I know, but you have finals. I'm sorry he woke you," she says, giving me a quick hug.

"Did I cry that much?"

"No, you were happy all time. Seriously, you were," she says, hugging me around the shoulders, "Were you asleep?"

"Mostly, how about you?"
