"Mother?" the prince asked, visibly shocked.

The maid stood up abruptly and bowed deeply. "Your majesty."

"You've got a lot of explaining to do," crossing the room in brisk strides she said sternly and sat down on one of the velvet chairs behind the two making them turn her way instantly.

The queen crossed her legs and flipped her half-up ash-blond hair, adorned with gold jewelry. Her ruby lips were crooked in displeasure.

Upon seeing the incensed look in her icy-blue eyes, Changbin started to shake in fear. He had never seen the queen so angry before. She did have a domineering aura, but she usually showed her kind and caring side. At that moment, he understood why she was called a Blue Jadeite.

The boy clenched his fists to concentrate for a moment and think of how to fix the damage Felix had caused with his careless announcement.

Seeing the state the smaller was in, the prince put a hand on his lower back and began to caress it in circular motions.

"Mother," he addressed the queen, "may I ask about the reason behind your visit in my chambers?"

The queen scoffed, uncrossing her legs and crossing them on the other side.

"Don't play dumb, Felix. I've heard about your little confession," she leaned forward like a snake ready to attack its prey. "Now you tell me what is this drollery about," she hissed.

Changbin could feel his heartbeat accelerate and his breathing became erratic. The prince took his trembling hand into his and smiled reassuringly at the boy.

"If you heard what I announced, then you should know better than to call it drollery," he replied calmly. "Changbin is having my baby and I'm going to take care of the both of them."

The queen took a deep breath.

"Are you aware of the consequences of your infantility?" she asked, massaging her temples. "Listen," she lifted her gaze at the two, "I have nothing against the boy not being from a royal family. I don't care about the status. Normally, I would be happy to find out that you'll have a successor but," the queen sighed, "you are engaged to princess Yizhuo. The Ning dynasty and the Lee dynasty forged an agreement to marry you two off. Have you considered how badly this going to harm our already bad relations with the Central Kingdom?"

Felix let go of the boy's hand and stepped in front of him protectively.

"And you? Have you ever considered that I don't want to marry her? No. You've never listened to my opinion on that. I told you this countless times, and I'll say that again. I am not going to marry anyone you want me to. For a moment, I believed in your "it's for the kingdom" bullshit and I almost gave in to the thought that this is my duty to throw away my true feelings and do what is best for the kingdom but not anymore,"

"I gave you a choice-"

Felix cut in and scoffed.

"A choice? Don't make me laugh. You expected of me to marry a friend for whom I did not have any romantic feelings. Of course, I didn't want to agree. Then you engaged Minho to his younger brother."

"And they fell in love. I'm sure you would fall for the princess too," she replied.

The prince rolled his eyes unceremoniously.

"Don't you see that what you have done to me and my brother is wrong? Yes, he did fall in love with Jisung eventually, and I'm happy for them, but you deprived us of the basic right to decide with whom we want to share our future. Love is not political affairs, mom."

For a moment the room filled with silence and heavy tension. Changbin's heart was beating like a deer's spotted by a poacher.

Suddenly, the queen stood up and turned towards the door.

"I know," she said in a more composed and softer voice; a voice full of regret. "It's hard for me too. As your mother, I want to support both you and your brother. Your happiness is the most important to me. But as a ruler of the South-East Kingdom, I am obliged to forsake what is a disadvantage. I wish it was as easy as you say. The kingdom is not just a pretty castle with a queen sitting on a golden throne. It's people," she turned her head to the side, looking at the carpeted floor, and continued, "people who trust us with their lives, and I'm not going to watch them die in a war just because I am a mother before a queen." Having said that, she left the prince's chambers.
