"No, no, no, no!" Iris whispered in shock at her father's revelation. Elder Markus stood in the middle of the living hall of their vast house and silently watched Iris pacing around.

"Surely father, you didn't agree, did you?" She asked hopefully.

Markus slumped his shoulders and sighed. He did agree to the proposal.

She swallowed back the lump in her throat and blinked back her tears. She was not one to cry and not now.

"Aaaaaaaah!" Iris screamed. Her room was in disarray.

Iris would survive any war, any pain but marrying the prince? She wouldn't survive that.

The king and queen has chosen her as the next queen and for the prince to agree, he would be allowed to keep his consort. She would hold power but she felt used.... She would be nothing to the prince.

Arranged marriages in the royal family was not a big deal, but the queen suffered. She may never fall in love with the Prince, but watching your husband love and give attention to another woman  would still hurt.

What would hurt more, would be if she so much as tried to fall in love. That would be more painful to survive. This was what her beloved father had signed up for her.

What about her say in this? The Prince would obtain something from all this, but she? She would get nothing.

She curled into a ball and thought bitterly at her fate. She couldn't disagree with the king. But she made up her mind.......

The prince blinked once, then twice..... If he had heard clearly he had to... To marry that warrior for the position of the queen and he got to keep Palin??

He remembered the disrespect back at the training grounds.

"I agree to the proposal father." Kai said before turning back and leaving the room. The king was beside himself with joy, but the Queen was cautious, why did Kai agree so easily?

"Revenge, Palin, she was so disrespectful, I want to see pain in her eyes when she as my wife doesn't get my attention, she ignored me, now I will," Kai explained this to Palin, who has immediately questioned his decision.

Was he by any chance in love with her? She wondered worriedly.

'No no no no, he can't be. I have to keep him to myself. I can't lose now.'

Palin thought to herself later in her chambers. The prince was hers and that warrior would have to get through her first.

That night Markus could ony watch his daughter toss and turn in her bed, and only dozed off at the hours of dawn. He couldn't sleep himself and could only worry behind closed doors at her daughter's fate.

He knew she was the right one for the kingdom, but was not sure about that Prince. He  would not live to watch his daughter suffer, but he was sure the Queen mother would keep her promise.

The announcement would be done tomorrow and the date of the wedding would also be proposed.

Iris walked up to the palace main building for breakfast. Today, as she had been informed, she would be dining with the royal family.

The dining room was, as any other room in the palace, well decorated in gold and red curtains and art.

In the middle stood a long dining table loaded with foods enough to feed the whole kingdom. Everyone was here. The King sat at the end of the table, with the queen mother seated opposite him to the right. The Prince sat across his consort and her father sat with one seat between him and the prince.

In laws indeed. Iris mused.

"Greetings, sorry I'm late," she apologized as she sat at the other end of the table. She would be damned if she even dared seat near any of those people.

A servant served her immediately and she smiled at her nervous face. She half smiled and looked away. Iris always tried to ease them when they were near her.

The idea of having all the people behaving so formal and respectful after becoming the Queen made her lose appetite.

She peeked up at the people in front of her, they were all looking at her as if expecting her to say something?

"Dear, what have you decided?" the Queen's soothing voice floated around the room and everyone turned to look at her, including the servants.

The queen looked at her and hopefully begged with her eyes for her to agree. Iris looked past her to the excited servants hopefully waiting for her answer, the king looked tense but could not meet her eyes and that included her father.

She looked at the Prince. He was not even paying attention ad was looking at Palin.

But.... What surprised her was Palin's expression. She looked angry and was glaring at her. Her  right hand holding her spoon so hard Iris thought it would break while her left hand fisted around  her robes under the table.

She looked outrageous. Palin hoped that Iris would refuse the proposal. After all she had seen her admiration on her that night. She hoped..... that iris would change the Kings decision.

Palin was observant enough to make a conclusion that she was favored by the king and queen. So she hoped.....

"I agree, your Majesty!"
