he could set the world on fire
and call it rain
JUNE FOURTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE6:44 in the morning
MORNING SHONE BRIGHTLY in Miyagi, the sun rising once more, a new day. Sora stood in the doorway of his room, cerulean eyes trained onto the trembling figure under the covers. A frown donned his face. Kageyama's default emotions were either anger or volleyball, and he did not do well when he was introduced to new and complicated emotions— defeat included. Therefore, it was only logical for him to cry his pain and insecurities away.
"Tobio, baby," Sora called softly, walking into the room with a tray of food in his hands. He placed it on the side table, perching on the edge of the bed. His fingers reached for his hair, gently carding through the raven strands. "I brought you breakfast."
The sunlight gilded the room as Kageyama whispered, so softly that only he could hear, "Am I a failure?" Something in Sora's chest broke—broke so violently that he wondered if it was possible for the heavens to have heard it.
"No, bunny. You're not."
He tugged down the blankets, spotting the tear-stained face of his lover.
"Absolutely not. You have, and always will be, a winner. Yes, you might have lost this match, but you can't let that depress you." He rubbed a thumb under his eye tenderly. "You have so much potential, Tobio. This is only your beginning."
Pure, sea-coloured orbs spoke of only the truth and nothing but the truth. As Kageyama stared up at him with watery eyes, quivering lips and an utterly broken expression, Sora gazed upon him. He loved him, and it was unquestionably terrifying. The things he would do to him— for him. If the universe dared steal him from his life, Sora would reign hell upon the world. A meteor would have to take him; thunder would have to be called for backup; the land would have to crack; the sun would have to eat itself before this knight ever let go of his king.
"I'll love you forever, Tobio."
Ah, how splendid. I love that word. Forever. I love that forever does not exist, but humans have created a word for it, and we use it all the time. It is as beautiful as it is doomed.
Just like their relationship.
"What brought this up?" Sora questioned.
"It's just that–" Kageyama sat up on the bed, raising his hands and rubbing his face–"everyone is suddenly moving faster, and I can't keep up. I don't want to be the last person. I don't want to be abandoned again." An ugly emotion ran through their bond. "What if they don't need me anymore? What if they find someone else to replace me? I failed them," he cried, tears dropping from his eyes, crystal clear beads. "I failed them as their setter. I'm supposed to get the team to victory! I'm supposed to be their path to nationals! But I can't do anything right." And as a guttural sob racked through his chest, Kageyama continued, speaking his horrifying prospect, "They left me once. I don't want them to leave me again."
