but maybe you can do something about it
DECEMBER TWENTY FOURTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHTEEN18:34 in the evening
"WAKE UP, RIN. It's Christmas Eve." The voice came from far away, muffled but still very distinct. Rin slowly became aware of the sounds of his father shuffling around his nursery in the darkness. There was an odd noise of metal clinking against plastic in the background.
Rin's eyes fluttered open. He squirmed around in his cot, searching for his father.
He found him by the door, unfolding his stroller.
"Wha," Rin called.
Sora looked over at his son and smiled. He looked exhausted. There were dark circles lining his under eyes and there was something different about his expression this time, as if he was holding himself back. From what? Rin had no clue. At just eleven months old, Rin couldn't quite understand what his father's face was saying. Or anything, really. He was still a baby.
"Hi, baby," Sora greeted in that low timber of his. Rin had always associated it with familial love. The type of love that's present, even in the silence. "How about we go out for a bit, yeah?" His father approached him, his footsteps light and gentle against the ground. "I want to show you something you haven't seen before."
Strong hands curled around his body, pulling him out of his cot and into the air.
"But you'll need to dress warm. It's freezing outside, and god forbid you get sick on Christmas. I won't hear the end of it."
Rin was bundled up tight, in some red coat and scarf and mittens, despite the biting cold. His father dressed the same, though the colours were different. Rin stared at him. When he thought of his father, he always pictured him with accompanying dark colours. Like the night sky that rocked the world to sleep.
As Sora settled Rin into his stroller, his phone rang.
"Take this," he told his son, handing him the new plush his mother had bought for Rin. It was an elephant with big ears and a long trunk. "I'll be back in a second, okay?"
He pressed the elephant into Rin's embrace, watching as his son grabbed it with a growing smile. Sora rounded the kitchen counter to grab his phone, glancing at the caller ID.
He answered it.
"Hey, man," Sora greeted, sliding the phone between his ear and his shoulder. "I'm just about to head out. Everything okay?"
"Where are you going at this time of night?" asked Terushima, sounding a little concerned.
Though, could you blame him?
His best friend wasn't in the most stable of situations right now.
"Just for a stroll with Rin," Sora replied.
