MAY SECOND,
TWO THOUSAND AND NINETEEN13:16 in the afternoon
LEANING BACK ON HIS CHAIR, Sora was scrolling through his calendar, clicking on his mousepad and checking his upcoming meetings. As he moved from week to week, he noticed he had requested for leave, a rather long one, by the looks of it. He furrowed his brows and thought aloud, "I don't remember this."
Deciding to call the one person who would have answers, Sora asked Funai to enter his office.
"Funai-san, why do I have a gap in my calendar next month?" he questioned, looking at his assistant as he stood by the wooden door.
Funai pursed his lips and looked through his own schedule, seeing the notes he had put down. He made a quick sound and explained, "Ah, you booked a trip to Italy, remember?"
"Oh."
Yes, he did remember.
This trip was going to be their honeymoon— his and Mikayo's before she, you know, died and shit. Sora remembered booking it in secret, keeping the details hidden away from her so he could surprise her on their wedding day.
He frowned. "I forgot all about it."
Mikayo told him once, under the starry skies, the air kissing their bare feet as they laid out on a blanket in the middle of a field, their eyes on the darkness and their hearts with one another, that she wanted to visit the city of ruins. To see what once lived— the fallen houses, the decaying structures. It was one of her dreams, and Sora swore silently to make it happen.
The night was slow and smooth; crickets chirped, and the sound came thin and chilly. The stars, effervescent and alive, burned, striding, floating through an endless universe. Living and dying— like humans, like us.
Sora turned his head to the side and watched as Mikayo raised her hand, fingers reaching for the heavens. She spoke softly, the midnight breeze carrying her words into his mind.
"People have lived before us. They have loved and laughed— just like us." She paused and shifted, meeting his infatuated gaze. "Don't you think that's beautiful? Because I do."
"I think you're beautiful," he had whispered to her, watching her cheeks flare up.
Time moved slowly, the clock hands ticking second after second, drawled and lethargic, stunned at the scene, yet blessing the couple with more— more seconds, more minutes, more time. Rigid, like a skeleton; it stopped for a moment. A corpse in the air, halting; frozen.
The memory he held tightly in his grasp came to an end, the film ending abruptly.
Sora blinked and looked at Funai, who was staring at him weirdly, waiting for a reply.
