hasn't he given enough?
what else do you want from him?
FEBRUARY SECOND,
TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHTEEN13:42 in the afternoon
THE SOUND OF A PHONE ringing didn't come as a surprise to the residence of an apartment that housed five. The contact name, however, did. Iwaizumi furrowed his brows, creases lined with confusion—and worry. He stared at the screen of his device, thumb hesitantly hovering over the green button. It rang incessantly in his hand.
"What's wrong, Iwa-chan?" Oikawa asked, noticing his soulmate's perplexity.
"Suzuki-san is calling me."
A name that hadn't been heard in years had the rest of his soulmates pausing in whatever they were doing, heads snapping in his direction. Kunimi frowned from where he sat on the couch across from Iwaizumi while Kindaichi turned away from the television, reaching for the remote to pause the movie he was watching. Kageyama's shoulders tensed as he turned around in the kitchen, his hands cradled around a mug of warm milk. Oikawa copied his actions, seated on the stool beside him, eyes narrowed and blindingly sharp.
Kindaichi blinked. "What? Why?"
"I don't know," Iwaizumi said.
"Answer it," Kageyama ordered, voice stern. There was no room for argument when it came to matters concerning Sora and his family. He may not want them anymore, may not love them the same, but they did. Kageyama still did. "It might be important."
Iwaizumi exhaled, his breath shaky. "Honestly? That's what scares me."
He reluctantly accepted Kimiko's call, putting it on speaker so the rest of his soulmates could hear what she had to say.
"Hello?"
"Ah, Hajime-kun." Oh, how the sound of her voice was like a blast from the past. Iwaizumi remembered all the times he would go over to Sora's house with the others, see his parents and share a hearty dinner with them. They would talk about nothing and everything, filled with the ribbons of their childish dreams and ideals. "I'm glad I got your number right. How have you been?"
"I've been alright," Iwaizumi answered, lips pursed. "It's been a while."
"It has, hasn't it? I would like to start off with pleasantries, but I'm afraid something of urgency has come up." Her words brought their startled gazes back to Iwaizumi, who looked just as worried as them.
"Is everything okay?" he wondered, a strange lump forming in his throat. The worst possibilities came racing to their minds. Why else would Sora's mother be calling them if not to inform them something bad had happened? Just the thought had their nerves trembling, fingers itching for information, for more, to understand and to know.
