APRIL FIFTEENTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND SEVENTEEN18:32 at night
ON SOME DAYS, MEMORIES would return, and they would pierce Sora like needles in the night, thin and obsolete. It didn't matter where he was. The returning memories were random, spontaneous. They appeared at any moment and would deplete his mood. Most of the time, it would be memories of his past. His soulmates— the ones he had abandoned.
That realization would hurt him. Sora had promised them—one more than others—that he would never abandon them. He broke that promise. Kicked it to the dirt and told it to go fuck itself. How cruel, he would think. How cruel I am. Other times, he would remember his childhood. How lonely it was. How isolating. And he would think, No. I was wronged. How cruel they are– not me.
Still, when he thought of them, saw their pictures on his phone, the last few texts they shared, his heart would throb violently. Darkness would shroud him, and Sora would once again feel like he was drowning. The ocean would crowd him, tug him to her depths, beg him for forgiveness— for mercy.
Take them back, she would cry. You belong with them, not her.
Sora would almost cave. How could he not? The ocean was asking. He lived for her.
Once, that was.
"Sora?" A familiar voice pulled him out of his thoughts. All at once, he could breathe. Sora gasped for air, eyes tense with grief. "Are you alright, honey? Did something happen?"
"I'm sorry, Mika." He coughed, clearing his throat and straightening his back. Sora had to remind himself that he was here, in the present. Not the past. "I was- distracted."
"Ah, I understand."
That simple statement put a smile on his face.
She always did.
"What were you saying?" he asked over the phone, the device sitting on his desk and projecting Mikayo's voice on the speaker.
"I was going to ask if you wanted to come over after work," she clarified.
Now, some people would think that was a booty call. Sora thought otherwise.
His eyes lit up. "Sleepover?"
"Yes." Maikyo laughed. "Sleepover."
Sora beamed from behind his desk. Suddenly, he felt all the more motivated to wrap up quickly and head over. He tapped on his keyboard, finishing up a contract.
