the silence was so loud that night,
even god had to hold his breath
AUGUST TWENTY SEVENTH
TWO THOUSAND AND NINE23:49 at night
IT HAD BEGUN. They could all see it. They could all feel it. It had begun, softly, dreadfully. The manifestation of Tooru Oikawa's insecurity. His inferiority complex began to take hold of his life, flourishing in the depths of his mind. Shadows blanketing his shoulders, self-hatred crowding his mind. Jealousy had often been an expression of insecurity; thus, its fixing required internal reflection and addressing one's self-esteem. Yet, Tooru Oikawa could do no such thing.
How could he be so insecure over his very own soulmate? Over the very boy who looked to him like he carried the knowledge of the whole universe. Stars sparkled in his ocean blue eyes every time Tooru spoke to him, and even when he did not, Tobio Kageyama thought nothing of him— he remained as he was in his vision. A king, a best friend. Someone who held him when he cried, kissed away the pain whenever he fell and scraped his knee. Someone who loved him. Someone who held a piece of his soul in his body.
How could he begin to hate his soulmate?
How could he?
Twilight washed over Miyagi. The six soulmates held another one of their sleepovers, this time occurring at Iwaizumi's house. His mother, Himari Iwaizumi, prepared a bunch of snacks and games for them to play, more than happy to see her beloved son spend time with those fated with him. Her husband, Akihiro Iwaizumi, was forced to take lots of photos of the boys interacting; Himari and the other mothers had a photo album specifically for their children. Pictures were printed and added, little pieces of their past attached here and there with colourful paperclips and stickers.
Right now, four of the six were fast asleep. In the middle of the living room laid Hajime, Tobio, Yuutarou and Akira, all cuddled together. Tobio laid slightly on top of Akira, the younger boy wrapping an arm around the setter's head. Yuutarou was full-on sprawled out, lips parted and snores rippling out his throat. Hajime, on the other hand, had his fingers intertwined with Tobio's, gently, almost subtly, but the touch was there. The pleasant comfort remained the same.
Two were missing.
None of the sleeping beings noticed.
Sitting outside on the Iwaizumi household porch was none other than Tooru Oikawa and Sora Suzuki. Himari and Akihiro had already bid their goodnights and retreated to their bedroom a few hours earlier. They left once they were sure the children were all safe and secure; Hajime grumbled that they were fussing over them for nothing.
"Now, now," laughed Himari, squeezing her son's cheeks, "I'm only making sure. It's a mother's duty to keep her children happy."
"We're happy," Hajime reassured, swiping his mother's teasing, playful hands from his face. "So, it's fine. Go to bed and sleep."
