MARCH TWENTY SEVENTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND FIFTEEN09:30 in the morning
ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER graduation. Everything was relatively the same; the only difference was Sora was sitting in the stands this time. He watched as his soulmate's name was called and cheered twice as hard, putting his fingers in his mouth and whistling as hard as he could. He saw how Kageyama flushed at the attention, his shoulders hunching forward as he walked across the stage. It made Sora laugh, adoration flowing through their bond.
Miwa and Satoshi were sitting on either side of him. Both had come to congratulate Kageyama, leaving their respective jobs. They sat together for hours while the ceremony went on. Miwa looked ecstatic, the stress of her job dissipating now that she was on a break. Satoshi looked the same. Despite the months they had been apart—despite the fact they weren't family—they still looked at Sora fondly, and he couldn't help but think about all the things they'd done together when he and Tobio were younger. The mornings and the afternoons, the nights and the days. They had been a part of his life since the very beginning. Sora couldn't be more grateful.
"Congrats, Tobio!" Miwa yelled as they bounded up to the boy. Kageyama could feel his face burn red from embarrassment, but he managed to keep himself standing straight with a slight nod of the head. The crowd around him mingled together, students of all ages hugging their friends and family.
"Thank you, Miwa-nee." Kageyama reached for his older sister. She had grown older and wiser as time passed. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face into the crook of her neck. "Thank you for coming."
"D'you think I'd miss this?" Miwa laughed haughtily, coming to rest her arms around his shoulders. "Hah! Don't make me laugh, Tobio. Not even the world on a silver platter would stop me from coming." She ruffled his hair fondly, and it almost brought tears to her eyes to realise how much her younger brother had grown now. Kageyama was taller than her and though she would never admit it, way more mature than she was at his age.
"I'm very proud of you, Tobio," Satoshi admitted. He walked up to his children, placing a hand on Kageyama's shoulder and kissing his temple. "Well done for graduating." His eyes shimmered with paternal love, worn and wrinkled with age.
"Thanks, Otou-san."
"He'd be very proud of you." Kageyama knew who he was talking about. His heart swelled.
He breathed, light and tentative, "I hope."
Sora watched the family from the sidelines. He saw the pride in Satoshi's eye and the way his smile softened when he looked at his son. It made him wonder things he'd rather not admit. Some sort of yearning spurred in his chest. Where was his familial love? Why couldn't he have the same as his soulmate?
