you have been the last dream of my soul
MAY SIXTH,
TWO THOUSAND AND TWELVE20:48 at night
INHALING THE GREYISH WHITE smoke, the odour that most likely foretold of darkened lungs and his future deathbed, Sora leant on his balcony, staring at the late afternoon sky. His fingers cradled a cigarette, and an ashtray laid on the small table beside him. Do you know what the worst part about anything that's self-destructive? It's the intimacy. You become so close with your addictions and illnesses that leaving them behind is like killing the part of yourself that taught you how to survive.
And for Sora? His addictions came in the form of alcohol, nicotine, and his soulmates.
Plural.
And as much as he tried to hate them, the only genuine, honest thing he hated was how much he utterly loved them. Or perhaps it was the mere idea of him not being as stoic and cold as he wished himself to be. No matter. He still tired—but to no avail. For the pull of his always irresistible soulmates remained ever-present. And no knight could remain loyal when constantly swayed by that tangible feeling in the air. Not even the King's Knight.
A ringing struck through the silence circling him. Sora looked down at his phone, spotting Tobio's name pop up on the screen. He scrunched his cigarette into the tray, defusing the flame at the tip. He answered the call.
"Hey, baby," he greeted, slotting the phone between his shoulder and ear.
"Hi, Sora."
A smile curled at Sora's lips. His soulmate's voice never failed to ease his soul.
"How was your match?" he asked, looking out at the marigold-coloured sky. He listened intently as Tobio explained the events of their match—how they sucked horribly and how Hinata was a pain in the ass, repeatedly asking to play another set (Sora heard the boy's offended shout in the background) and how Nekoma's setter was incredible, even if he lacked motivation and agility most of the time.
"How about you ask him for advice?"
"He left before I could say anything." Sora could hear Tobio's dampened voice; he could almost imagine the pout on his king's face. He laughed silently, and on the other side of the call, Tobio glowered, feeling the amusement thrum through their bond. "He's also Hinata's soulmate."
"Oh?" Surprise flooded through his body. "Then use that as a way to bond. Shoyou's your best friend, isn't he?"
Kageyama's face reddened.
My...best friend?
Shaking his head, Sora laughed. He checked the time on his phone and returned, "I gotta get going, Tobs, but I'll see you afterwards, okay?"
