Chapter thirty-four

Two months have passed since that incident,and while both teens suffered a great deal mentally,it brought them closer than they ever were before. It also motivated them to do better. Well er-what was better to them anyway.

Liam stepped up his pranks and scamming skills and was driving nearly everyone up the wall,especially Tracy. And although she'd never admit it,she secretly enjoyed it. Reminded her of two certain old prankster friends she had at her time at the dumping ground that went by Lol and Crash

And Riley stepped up her archery so much and practiced so intensely she made permanent weird marks on the tree she shot the arrows at
Which just so happened to be Gina's favourite tree which of course means she got yelled at daily,but she didn't care
She's also been spending much more time with her lil sis
She couldn't stand seeing Nina grow up so fast and wanted to capture every minute of it.
Right now they're at the Park,just spending some alone time together. Nina's on the swing while Riley's pushing her and they're both laughing at Nina's screams every time the swing goes a little higher

"Hey watch this" Riley yelled over the sound of the wind as she pushed the swing up,ducked under it,and emerged under it onto the other side to which Nina let out screams of laughter
They played on the swings a little while more till they heard the ice cream van and of course,what's a sister date without ice cream?

Riley bought two large chocolate ice creams for them both and they went to sit down at a random bench while licking their ice creams

It was a sunny day,which often comes as some sort of miracle in Newcastle

"Can we go find some shade" Nina whined

"Why?"

"I'm starting to get some freckles look" she pouted

"What's wrong with freckles they're gorgeous"

"They're nottttt" she continued to whine
"Oh believe me,they are" Riley muttered while thinking of Liam's freckles
Nina rolled her eyes and just then Riley's phone rang

"Well look who's finally decided their best friend exists" she said sarcastically

"Oh shut up" came Lydia's voice from the other side of the phone
"What happened to I'm gonna come visit in a few months?"
"There wasn't time okay but now that my parents are getting some time off from work I can guarantee a visit in the next few months"
"You bloody well better I miss seeing your face"

They said their goodbyes and Nina said she was tired so they held hands and strolled back home

They opened the door and Nina went straight upstairs for a nap and Riley entered the living room and saw there was no one there other than Elektra reading some random magazine
"Where is everyone?" Riley asked and Elektra merely shrugged
She turned around to go up to her room when

"GJFJSKFJAKSAAADJKSAAA" she screamed as everyone else was rolling around on the floor gasping for air through all the laughter at her reaction

"I hate the whole lot of you" Riley said dryly as they took off their giant alpaca costumes

Last night,when they were all hanging out in the living room,they were talking about their weird fears and Riley mentioned how ever since she got chased by an alpaca when she was 4 she's been scared of them

"You know you don't" frank commented as he wiped the tears of laughter from his face
"Oh believe me I do" Riley rolled her eyes as she ducked under Liam's stretched arm as he reached out for a hug,still laughing at her reaction

"Oh that was priceless" Tee laughed
They entered the kitchen for tea and all let out a scream when they saw only vegetables on the table

"Payback" Riley smirked crunching on a chicken nugget

They all sighed in relief

Two more months passed,and Riley was pacing in her room
"You're gonna make a hole in the floor if you keep going for much longer" Mike commented
"How long have you been there" Riley asked startled
"Five minutes and counting" he replied "I had a bit of a headache so I came up to see what you were doing but to be honest watching you pace around like that made my headache worse" he chuckled
"Very funny"
Mike chuckled as he came and sat down on her bed
"What's troubling you young lad" "shall I compare thee to a summer's da-"

"Oh god no" Riley groaned as Mike laughed
He enjoyed bugging her,merely cause he sometimes felt like she secretly enjoyed it

In which case,he was right
The fatherly warmth Riley has felt around him since she's been at the dumping ground is one that she had never felt before

"Jokes aside,what's troubling you" he smiled

Riley huffed as she flopped onto the bed and said
"Well,it's Liam and I's one year anniversary tomorrow and I have no clue what to do for him. He's not the typical cheesy type but I still want to do something for him"

"One year?"
"One year."

Wait

One year?
It's been one year since that day they confessed at the park and had their kiss in the rain
Over one year since they sang together at the competition
Over one year since their first kiss on the rooftop in Milan
Over one year since she arrived at this place with her little sister and got introduced to a new life

Over one year since she tried to take her own life

She suddenly realised and felt really overwhelmed
It hasn't even felt like that long ago as she was still battling the same demons,just with a family by her side and support at this time

Mike seemed to notice how shes feeling and pulled her in for a hug and planted a soft kiss on her forehead

"You know,you've been here for over a year,and it's your one year anniversary with Liam tomorrow,and ever since I first met you at the hospital there hasn't been one single moment where I haven't been proud of you"

Riley felt her heart melt at his words
She's heard these words before from Liam,Lydia,Tracy,but to hear them from a parental figure for the first time in her life ..
Well you couldn't exactly blame her for getting emotional

"And as for what to do for Liam,well we wouldn't exactly want to ruin his careless scammer reputation but between you and me I think we both know you could give him a rock and if it's coming from you he'd see it as a diamond" Mike chuckled as Riley laughed with him

"Thanks da- I mean thanks Mike" she quickly corrected herself feeling herself going a bit red with embarrassment

Mike smiled at her and left the room closing the door behind him.

If only she knew how much he wished she didn't correct herself
