Milo was Mr chatty all the way there. I quickly came to realise that this was going to be less an educational visit for him and more a chance for him to show off his super-human knowledge of the stars and planets.

We wait in line until a plastic-faced Barbie doll looking woman checks us in. “Okay guys you’re all booked in, you’re free to look through all the exhibits then you’re set for the star gazing show at 3 in the auditorium. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

Yes - You can stop eye fucking my boyfriend. Seriously, if this receptionist let’s her eyes roam over him one more time I’m going to drag her across that desk and give her a solo trip too seeing her own fucking stars.

Jayce can sense my annoyance. He slips his hand around my waist reassuringly and kisses my head before answering.

“No we’re fine thanks.”

Her face is so good I wish I could take a damn picture. Yeah bitch, he’s mine.

Milo shoots off across the bridge that hangs over a giant 3d representation of the solar system. He gazes down at all the people walking around lost in wonderment.

“Do you want to hold onto my hand or something little man? Its pretty high up here.” I ask, watching him peering further and further over the side.

Milo laughs. “Aleah I’m almost eight! I’m not scared of anything but if you’re scared then you can hold Jayce’s hand.”

I couldn’t help it when a little laugh left me when looking at his cheeky little face. You could already see how much of a heart breaker he was going to be. He was too cute for his own good.

I feel Jayce intertwine his fingers with mine. “Come on scaredy cat.” He winks at me and I roll my eyes at him. Are they going to gang up on me all day? I’m being tag teamed by the Thompson brothers and honestly... I love it.

The museum was quiet, Milo loved just  being able to get to the front of everything without having to wait. He beamed with pride as he described every exhibit in vivid detail, he started to form a bit of a following wherever we went as people stopped to listen to his little speeches.

Jayce never let go of my hand. We were well out of Westbrooke and unlikely to run into anyone who knew us. It felt amazing to be out with him, not having to hide or worry. Just being a normal couple doing a normal thing for once.

I freaked slightly when a guy stopped Jayce to talk basketball, he was from a school out of state that had faced him last year. He barely glanced at me probably assuming I was just Jayce’s latest conquest.

As we got to the end of the displays there was a planet themed play area. Milo saw the ball pit and bolted in before we had a chance to say anything.

Jayce bought us all milkshakes and we got a table in the corner, where I could see Milo now running back and forth along the rope bridge.

There was a mum sitting on the table across from us trying to nurse her baby, whilst her toddler screamed about not being able to get his shoes off and get in the play area. I could see she was getting more and more flustered and her children were getting frustrated.

“Can we help?” I asked as she tried to dig through her changing bag with one hand.

“Oh could you? Thank you! His shoes are knotted and I can’t find a bloody pacifier in this thing!”

Jayce lent down to help the little boy while I started to look in the bag. I found what she was looking for and relief flooded her face.

“Oh thank you! I had a moment of dread thinking I’d forgotten it. It’s our first trip out since she’s been born without their dad and it’s one of those days where everything that could go wrong has!” I remember how hard things were for Granny when she first took on the girls. Mat was a handful even then and I remember a similar stress in her voice every time things kept going wrong.

The lady started to calm down as the little bundle in her arms began to drift off to sleep.

“Mum I don’t want to go in on my own, will you come with me?” I could see her little boy putting on the puppy dogs that I bet worked most of the time.

“Sweetheart, I can’t leave Ashalina right now, you’ll be fine, there’s lots of little ones in there to play with.”

The little cutie turned his attention to Jayce. “Can you take me to play with your little boy?”

Jayce chuckled and extended his enormous hand to encompass the child’s tiny one. He lent back and quickly kissed my cheek before leaving. The gorgeous little boy seemed unable to believe Jayce’s size as he stood to his feet and followed him like a little puppy back to the play area talking something about giants and beanstalks.

“He’s a good one you’ve got there. The little boy you came in with, he’s your..?”

I smile. “He’s Jayce’s baby brother. We’re just taking him out for the day, he loves all this space stuff. He’s my little genius.”

The lady seemed to nod in understanding. “I hope my two are like that one day. It’s so lovely to see siblings that actually want to spend time together. You two are very sweet together too, childhood sweethearts?”

I wasn’t really sure what we were but saying that actually we spent a decade hating each other, our parents fell in love, we moved into bedrooms next door to each other and couldn’t stop ourselves wanting to rip each others clothes off didn’t feel like the right thing so I just smiled and looked back at Jayce.

He was so bloody cute, he was sitting waist deep in the ball pit letting all the kids bombard him with balls, Milo leading the charge. How could he have so much fatherly instinct despite having such a poor role model? He’s living proof that you are what you make yourself not what your parents gave you.

I could have sat watching him forever like that. He’d grown, changed so much since the day I moved in. I think if it’s possible I love him even more watching this side of him.

Milo almost pulled my arm out of the socket yanking me from my seat when he realised how long he’d been playing. We raced to the auditorium just in time for our 3 pm slot.

Milo nestled himself in between me and Jayce as we settled in to watch the show. I had never seen anything like it before, the lights went out and suddenly it was like I was laying outside looking up at the stars.

The room filled with 3d holograms taking us on tours of every inch of our solar system. I looked down at Milo and it was better than anything being protected around me. He was elated, his head whipping around in every direction as he tried to take in every detail. I just wanted to squeeze his cute little face as his eyes looked like they were going to bulge out from it.

I knew he’d remember this forever and was beyond grateful that I got to be the one to spend it with him.

I look at Jayce but he’s just staring back at me. I whisper asking if he’s okay. I see him grab his phone then feel mine go off.

‘Just let me adore you will you.’

I try to hide my blush under the cloak of darkness but I know there’s no way he can’t see it. His hand slides across the top of Milos seat and starts to run circles along the back of my neck.

I feel Milo shift as he cuddles into my side, his arms coming around my waist. “Thank you Aleah, this is better than I even thought it would be. You’re the best big sister ever.”

My heart feels like the Grinch’s at the end of the movie when it suddenly grows three sizes.

This day has been perfect.
