Aleah’s P.O.V.

I hadn’t heard Brie cry in years. This was bad, really bad.

I pulled up Tara’s number and momentarily hesitated - It’s for Brie Aleah.

She picked up after the first ring. “Aleah? Oh thank god Aleah! Where are you? Are you coming hom-"

“I need you to come to Brie’s house. Now. Her mother is there and she’s threatening to take back custody of May. Can you do your law thing and help?”

There was a moment of silence. “I’m on my way.” I was grateful for the short conversation, I didn’t have the time or energy for a heart to heart right now.

*********

“What does she mean her mother’s going to take May? I thought her mother was the one that left them both with Mrs G in the first place?”

Jayce was driving like a lunatic but for once I was glad. I debated on just running through the park straight there but Jayce insisted he could get us here faster.

“She did, she fucked off years ago. She hasn’t even seen May since she was a baby. I don’t understand why she would suddenly come back now, it doesn’t make any sense.” Why now?

I needed a distraction. “Why do you call her Mrs G?” Everyone I knew called her Granny, I wasn’t entirely sure what her first name was. Even dad called her Granny.

“My father told us it was inappropriate to call her Granny so we called her Mrs G when she was working. Milo was so little when she retired he couldn’t even say that. I think he calls her Granny now.”

I completely forget sometimes about Granny’s relationships with Tara and Jayce extends far beyond me. She worked there for over 15 years, she probably knows them all better then I do in a lot of ways.

“What did she call you guys?” I can’t believe we’d never had this conversation before and right now I needed something to stop me from wanting to launch myself out of the car and run every time we hit a red light.

“Think she still calls mum Ms T. She just calls me Jayce, unless I’d just stolen one of her cookies before it cooled. Then she’d pretty much call me all the names under the sun and chase me up the stairs waving around a spatula.” He chuckles.

I wanted to laugh at the idea of Granny running around the manor after Jayce as a kid but my anxiety was just too high.

I didn’t even let the car come to a complete stop outside Granny’s before I ran into the house.

I threw open the door and was confronted by the she-devil herself. There she stood in a dress too tight and heels so high she could barely walk staring at her overly long acrylic nails.

“Wow, Aleah? You got grown girl. Good to know that bitch hasn’t changed, still running to you when she can’t cope with any minor inconvenience.” She hasn’t fucking changed either I see.

Minor inconvenience? She considers ripping May away from her family and her home a minor inconvenience?

I looked straight passed the poor excuse for a mother staring at me to Granny. “Where is she?”

Granny nodded her head towards the stairs and I ran up. I could see the bathroom door locked and banged on it.

“Babe it’s me!”

Brie swung the door open with May in her arms. She looked exhausted, like she hadn’t slept all night. Her hair was a mess and her clothes looked like she’d grabbed them straight out of the dirty hamper next to her.

“Is Tara here?” I’d never heard her voice so shaky. Her face was drenched in tears and she was holding May against her so tight I thought they might become conjoined.

“She’ll be here any minute.”

The front door opened downstairs and I heard Anna gasp and Jayce’s voice.

“You?! You’re Bries mum?”

Brie followed me down the stairs. All I could see was Jayce making his way across the kitchen to Granny but his eyes were glued to Anna. Her usual cocky demeanour was all but gone, she actually looked terrified of him. Why?

Brie pushed past me and walked straight passed her mother with May to stand behind Jayce. Anna didn’t even look at the little girl she abandoned as a baby for a moment.

I walked to stand with them, blocking May from Anna’s view. I looked up to Jayce. “What’s going on?”

My question was quickly answered when the door swung open and a towering figure I had hoped to never see again entered the house.

His evil smirk spread straight across his face as he walked around like he fucking owned the place.

He ignored us completely, instead stepping to Granny and extending his hand.

“Very good to see you again Mrs G.” Granny didn’t acknowledge him, instead turning back to her daughter and looking at her with disgust.

He spoke again. “Well that’s incredibly rude of you, I expected better.” He went to take a step closer but Jayce stepped between them.

“Get the fuck away from her.” He spoke through gritted teeth.

The man flashed his eyes from Jayce to May who was now shaking like a leaf in Bries arms trying to bury her head into Bries neck.

“I’m not here for you Jayce. I’m here for my daughter.”

No. He couldn’t be May’s father. Not him. Jayce’s eyes followed from the man to May and the realisation hit him as well.

Brie grabbed my shoulder pulling my attention.

“Al what’s going on? Who is he?”

I swallow hard trying to steady myself as I looked into the eyes of the little girl who’s world was about to come tumbling down.

“He’s Jayce’s father.”
