Kelly’s is packed when we get there.
“Want to get coffee to go and just do it at mine?” Chad asks as he looks around at the full tables.
I can’t exactly tell him that I can’t be alone with him because I promised my secret boyfriend, who just happens to be his best friend, that I wouldn’t now can I?
“No, we’ll make it work.” I see two people getting up from a tiny table at the back and zoom over to the seats before anyone else gets there.
“Vanilla latte extra shot?”
Should I be scared or impressed that he remembers my order?
“I’ll get them, you got the last lot. You just watch the table doesn’t get stolen, I’m pretty sure I just cut in front of the couple giving me evils over there.”
Chad glances back at the woman standing by the door, using her eyes to try and carve a hole into my head, and laughs.
“It’s probably safer I go, if she comes over here looking at me like that I might just give her the table to save my soul.”
He goes over to the counter and returns a few minutes later with our coffees and a large slice of chocolate fudge cake with two forks.
“You didn’t want your own? Because honestly, I will be taking most of that. You may get two bites, tops.” I bury one of the forks into the gooey chocolatey goodness and hold back a moan as it enters my mouth.
Chad just stares at me. I wait for him to do or say anything but he just stares at my mouth. I rub my lips with a napkin to check I’m not covered in chocolate already but nothing.
I pick up another piece of cake on my fork and waft it in front of his face, breaking his eye contact.
“You sure you don’t want any?” I tease the cake by his lips trying to wind him up and he quickly snaps his lips around it and eats the whole piece.
“Chad! That was my fork! Ewwww, you keep it.” I throw the fork on the table in front of him and pick up the other.
“Jesus Ally, you’d swear I’ve got some sort of weird disease or something.” I stare at him wide eyed and he knows what I’m thinking.
“Ally I am not that bad! God, you’d swear I was some kind of man-whore the way you talk about me sometimes.” He takes another bite of cake.
“Well, if the shoe fits.” I tease.
He laughs. “The reputation is worse than the reality I assure you. What you so worried about anyway? Scared that if we share a fork you might get a tiny taste of me and forget all about your new boy-toy?”
Okay, this has to stop.
“I talked to Brie.”
He almost chokes on his cake and has to take a giant swig of his coffee just to stop the coughing and spluttering.
“Look, that night... we’d all had a lot to drink and I wasn’t happy seeing you upset... Brie used that weird magic of hers when she cornered me and I’m not even sure what I said yes too..”
He was rambling and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Chad actually get flustered. It was nice to peek through under the surface of the arrogant exterior.
“...it was a momentary lapse in judgement.”
I scan his face. He isn’t giving a lot away but it doesn’t really matter anyway, I’m with Jayce so this has to stop.
“I get it. It’s just... I actually like you Chad, honestly I never thought I could but you’re a much better person than you ever led me to believe before. You’re good and kind and you took care of me when I needed someone too. It means more to me than I can even put into words.. But..”
