"You will leave my house. Both of you. I will not let you or that monster take my granddaughter." Granny may be an older and slightly frailer lady than she once was but her presence hadn't wavered over the years. She commanded respect.

Jayce's father glared through her. It was clear he wasn't used to being spoken down to, especially by a woman. I looked to Jayce expecting to see him smile at Granny's words but he was just staring at May, like he was suddenly seeing her again for the first time.

"Monster? I was good to you Gloria. Kept you in a good job when no-one else would have employed a woman from this neighbourhood to work in a house like that. You should be grateful."

I've seen Granny cross, I've seen her shouting and screaming about dropping us all off to the nearest orphanage on her way to live with a young cute waiter in the Bahamas but I had never seen her like this. She was furious.

"Grateful? GRATEFUL?! Mr Thompson let me remind you that you are in my house now. Maybe you have forgotten but I was in your home for over 15 years and there is very little that gets past the help." She rises to her feet and stares directly into the eyes of the walking pit of evil. "I would see the women sneaking out of your office at all hours of the day and night still trying to fix their clothes, I would see beautiful Ms T laying on the floor barely able to breathe after you were done ripping through her soul. And I would see the days, height of summer, when this precious boy right here would still be in long sleeve tops making sure to cover the marks you left the night before. Do not think that you can pull anything past me boy."

I looked to Jayce, I had guessed from what had been said in passing, from the way Milo reacted upon seeing his father, that he wasn't a nice man but to hit your own son? He was sick.

"Did you know I was there that day? The day Ms T finally slung you from that house. I heard the scream, I still hear the way that little babe shrieked as you finally got him, just like you always threatened you would. You are no man, he was younger than May, what kind of man would hurt his baby?"

He couldn't have? My mind flashed back to that night when he turned up at the door after Milos accident. The way Milo shook as I held him against me - 'Cole won't let him get me will he?'

"You hit Milo?" My voice was weak, I wasn't sure I was even saying the words out loud, it was almost like I was questioning myself on what I had just heard , unable to process the information correctly.

It was clear the man hadn't noticed my presence until this moment. He looked me up and down before answering.

"You women, always so precious about your kids. Children need discipline, even the young ones. Tara just over-reacted like she always did. You have no idea what kind of father I was. Do you think Jayce would be who he is today without me? I was tough granted, but it got him to where he needed to be. He's the best because I made him the best. May will be too."

He made my skin crawl. How dare he take credit for who Jayce is. He became everything he is in spite of his father, not because of him.

"You won't get the chance." Jayce's hands were balled up at his side and I could see what he wanted to do.

I couldn't let him, if he hit him now then his father would only use it to further his claim over May. I wrapped my hand around his wrist trying to steady him.

"Jayce, don't. It's what he wants."

His father smirked at us. "Listen to the girl Jayce. She's a pretty thing isn't she? I'm surprised something as little as people calling her your sister has held you back from that one. You must be losing that Thompson hold over women without me there to guide you." Shit did he know something? No, there's no way. He was just trying to provoke him. "At least you had a father, Jayce. This one's daddy ran away from her the moment he saw what a whore she was going to turn out to be."
